Bluegrass at the Village to be held on Aug. 13

Bluegrass at the Village will return to Pioneer Village in the Town of Saukville on Sunday, Aug. 13.

The event will include performances by Piper Road Spring band at 11 a.m., Stillhouse Junkies at 1 and 4 p.m., Pickin’ Up Speed at 2 p.m. and Fox Crossing String Band at 3 p.m.

There will be more than 500 seats under the tent, and those attending may also bring their own lawn chairs.

Food and drink will be available for purchase, but carry-ins are not allowed.

Raffles will also be part of the event.

Tickets on sale for Palette to Plate gala

Tickets are available for the third annual Palette to Plate fundraising dinner sponsored by the Cedarburg Art Museum.

The Saturday, Aug. 19, event will be held in the museum’s outdoor courtyard and sculpture garden from 5 to 9 p.m.

The event includes a farm-to-table dinner curated and presented by Chef Andrew Wilson of Brandywine, live music from Lulu Quintet, silent and live auctions and a cash bar.

Proceeds from the event support the museum’s programs and exhibits and maintenance of the 1898 Wittenburg/Jochem mansion.

Impact Award winners donate to nonprofits

Two nonprofit organizations in Ozaukee County recently received donations from the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center.

The $200 donations were paid for through the Simplicity Foundation Fund, which is sponsored by Ozaukee Impact Awards. Award winners selected the charities to receive the donation.

Donations were given to the Family Promise/Ozaukee Food Alliance on behalf of the Back 2 School Fair, Kirsten Coenen and Kohler Credit Union; and Ozaukee Freemasonry on behalf of Leonard Johnson.

Free Range Art to hold summer show

Free Range Art Farm will host a summer art show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 6.

Some of the artists and their specialties include: owner of Free Range Art Nancy Going, jewelry; Lisa Brobst, woodworking; Jean Wells, pottery; Krista V. Allenstein, painting; Megan Woodward Johnson, painting; Mel Kolstad, printmaking; Donna Wallner, metalwork; and Roxane Mayeur, encaustics.

St. Mary’s Little Kohler to host gathering

St. Mary’s Church in Little Kohler will host its 15th annual gathering beginning at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19.

The event starts with the Rosary followed by a potluck dinner and fellowship time.

Get ready to harvest your garden tomatoes

The months of August and September are prime tomato season, when the bright red and orange orbs are at their peak.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that every American eats more than 22 pounds of tomatoes a year — most in the form of catsup or tomato sauce.

But this time of year, it’s tomatoes fresh off the vine that tempt people. Their flavor can’t be beat, and it marries well with most other foods.

Try making a simple caprese salad of halved cherry tomatoes with small pieces of fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, a little olive oil and salt.

Gardening hiatus shows how minutes add up to hours

A snip here. A bit of pruning there. A quick staking job. Pulling a weed that has popped up out of nowhere.

These are the little jobs that gardeners do every day while passing through the garden. They are mostly mindless tasks that a gardener recognizes and accomplishes often while on the way to do something else.

A good way to judge just how much of this mindless garden work is being done is to leave your garden in the middle of summer.

Bob Prince paused while sitting at the kitchen table in his Grafton home.

“Now we’re getting philosophical,” he said when asked why he liked cars.

The 83-year-old has a few classics in his garage, including a 1931 Town of Milwaukee fire truck, an red convertible Austin-Healey he said he “pretty much built from scratch,” a 1957 white Chevrolet Corvette, a 2012 Jaguar and a 1964 Honda CB77 Super Hawk motorcycle.

“Each one has its own personality,” he said.

A ride through the countryside

Every summer, dozens of farm tractors parade through the northern Ozaukee County countryside from Ken Jentges’ farm in the Town of Port Washington to the Mirror Bar in Dacada and back again.  During this year’s ride earlier this month, Jentges, who organizes the parade, waved as he climbed into his Spirit of ’76 Case tractor (above left). Liam Pantel, 3, fit perfectly in the hub of a large tire (above right).

Tech Tuesdays for teens to run through Aug. 15

The Niederkorn Library is one of 15 libraries to receive a Teens Teach Tech grant from AT&T and PLA Incentive to provide technology resources to middle school students.

The grant will also allow the library to increase its technology outreach efforts with the Port Senior Center.

“The goal of the grant is to improve the digital skills of residents,” Library Director Tom Carson said.

Library Youth Services Director Jamie Mercer noted that the grant will help teach students and seniors how to be responsible with their digital footprint and handle tech challenges.
