Huntin’ for pumpkins in Upper Lake Park

A crowd of youngsters and their families spent time in Upper Lake Park in Port Washington on a chilly Friday, Oct. 27, during Huntin’ for Pumpkins, sponsored by the Port Parks and Recreation Department, along with PW Pride and the Greater Port Washington Kiwanis Club. Horse painter is next artist in residence

Julie Anna Freund is the November artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Freund said she creates art that “honors the positive impact horses have had on my life. My hope is to share my love and appreciation for these animals through my artwork.”

She will demonstrate her art at the center from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24 and 25.

Freund will also teach an acrylic painting workshop, “Scale It Up: First Things First,” which will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.

Receiving a quilt of honor

Reception set for artist at Gallery 224

Lisa Leick is the November artist of the month at Gallery 224 in downtown Port Washington.

A reception for Leick will be held from 6 to 7 :30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.

Leick was an ArtServancy resident at the Biehl Nature Preserve at Lake Twelve.

Her exhibit features works created at Biehl Nature Preserve.

Leick earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in communication design from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2006 and built a successful career as a graphic designer and art director in the food and beverage industry.

Library activities in November announced

The Niederkorn Library in Port Washington has announced a slate of activities aimed at adults to be held in November.

  A career planning workshop will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 3 to 5 p.m.

One-on-one sessions will be held by Emily Smith, human resources consultant from Ansay & Associates, who can help with career planning needs such as resume reviewing, interview preparation, job searches and application.

People may drop-in or register for an appointment.

Third Fare and Flair to benefit Habitat

The third annual Fare and Flair event to benefit Habitat for Humanity Ozaukee will be held in the next month.

The event begins with an online auction that starts at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, and runs through 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.

Among the items people may bid on are an autographed Green Bay Packers football, Milwaukee Wave and Milwaukee Admirals tickets, Harley-Davidson luggage and home goods. 

The event culminates with a tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center, 2360 Dakota Dr. in Grafton.

Coppersmith, author to give Nov. 6 talk

Coppersmith and author Sara Dahmen will speak at the Monday, Nov. 6, quarterly meeting of the Ozaukee County Historical Society.

The meeting will be at the Landt-Thiel American Legion Hall in Saukville at 7 p.m. Dahmen’s presentation and a book signing will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided.

Dahmen makes pure metal kitchenware based on American traditions and wares in her garage for her company House Copper and Cookware.

12th annual Empty Bowls set for Nov. 3

The 12th Annual Empty Bowls event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.  Friday, Nov. 3, at Grafton High School.

The event is a fundraiser for Family Sharing’s food pantry.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.

Those attending may sample eight soups made by local vendors, including Shully’s Cuisine and Events, Prime Minister, From Scratch Catering, Brandywine, Stilt House, St. Paul’s Fish Market, Out & Out Eatery and Grafton High School’s Advanced Foods class.

Ag Society to hold annual meeting Nov. 3

Killing of famous sycamore a reminder of the value of trees

What is the value of a tree?

It depends who you ask. A grower at a nursery might add up the years of care a tree receives and come up with a dollar figure. To the wildlife and insects that it provided for, it could be a matter of life or death. And the people who have gotten engaged or scattered the ashes of a loved one underneath it certainly couldn’t put a price on it.

It’s hard to assign a specific value to a tree because we usually only consider it when it’s gone.
