Town renews Farmland Preservation certificate

The Belgium Town Board on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to agriculture by approving a renewal of its Farmland Preservation certificate.

The certificate verifies that the land meets state soil and water conservation standards. 

“It’s very near and dear to my heart. This is the one tool we think can help us stave off annexation, certainly to the south. We’re going to do what we can to keep the Town of Belgium the Town of Belgium. We want to remain who we are,” Town Chairman Tom Winker said.

Junk vehicles remain in question in the town

The Town of Belgium’s battle over having a property owner either remove or register a number of vehicles at his residence continues after two years.

On Tuesday, Supr. Tom Bichler said he would contact the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office to have a deputy sent to check if David Porath at 2084 Hwy. A has the vehicles registered.

“This has gone on way too long,” Town Chairman Tom Winker said.

Jay Road railroad crossing work to commence

Some Town of Belgium residents looking to drop off garbage and recycling from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16,  may need to take a detour.

Work on the Jay Road railroad crossing is scheduled to start on Monday, Sept. 14.

People will not be able to cross the tracks to access the town’s transfer site from the east. They may only come from the west, Town Chairman Tom Winker said.

Union Pacific Railroad will be replacing the track bed and paying for the project.

Hydrant flushing to start next week

Hydrant flushing will start in the Village of Belgium on Monday, Sept. 14.

It is expected to run from 8 a.m. to about 3 p.m. each day until as late as the first week of October, Director of Public Works Dan Birenbaum said.

The flushing will start on the east side of the village.

Residents may notice some discoloration in their water during this process, which is not harmful, according to officials. Letting faucets run for a short time after the flushing clears the pipes. The village asks residents to wash clothes at night during this period.

CG-Belgium walkathon is Sept. 22

The Cedar Grove-Belgium Parent Teacher Student Organization is holding its annual walkathon on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Students from 4K through eighth grade set goals and seek pledges. They have 30 to 60 minutes to complete the course on the high school track.

The event includes music and raffles. Parents are welcome to attend.

Money goes to school funding requests. The class that raises the most money gets an ice cream party.

Harrington Beach fall hike is Sept. 19

A fall harvest hike will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, at Harrington Beach State Park in Belgium.

The hike along tiki torch-lit trails will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

There will also be live music and food for purchase.

Other events will also be held at the park that day.

A program on creating walking sticks will be held at 5 p.m.

“Window to the Universe” with the Northern Cross Science Foundation will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Puckett’s Pond picnic area.

The events are sponsored by the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park.

School buses allowed through road construction area

The reconstruction of South Main Street in Cedar Grove shouldn’t affect school bus routes or schedules as children returned to classes this week.

“They (construction workers) were told by the village that the school buses need to get through,” Johnson Bus Cedar Grove Terminal Manager Stacy Yankunas said.

It’s the first day for new staff too

The Cedar Grove-Belgium School District welcomed more than students to school this week. Seventeen new staff members joined the district.

Krechel resigns from School Board in order to coach soccer

John Krechel’s time on the Cedar Grove-Belgium School Board lasted about 17 months.

Krechel resigned last month to work for the district in a different capacity. He took over as boys’ head soccer coach.

He left the board so he wouldn’t indirectly be his own boss.

Krechel had coached youth soccer, basketball and baseball and was the Rockets’ varsity assistant the last three years.soccer 

Harrington Beach State Park asks for supplies

Harrington Beach State Park in the Town of Belgium is seeking craft supplies to make walking sticks and animal masks. The list includes parachute cord 550 (3/16th of an inch), wooden and pony beads, leather lacing, leather boot laces, macrame cord, jingle bells, faux fur, craft feathers, mask forms, wire-edge ribbon, threaded sequins, glitter paint, Sharpie markers, string or cord, elastic cord, ribbon, cardstock and fancy papers.
