Five Pirates head for D1 competition

Port Washington High School has five athletes who will compete in Division 1 college athletics this fall.

The quintet has racked up three individual state titles and a number of conference crowns and state-meet berths.

Garett Kawczynski won individual state wrestling titles as a junior and senior, going 38-0 during his final season, and finished tied for the most career victories at Port High with legend Alex Dieringer with 172.

Kawczynski will wrestle for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he wants to train for a career in military intelligence.

Grafton holds Football Experience Night

Grafton’s football program held its Football Experience Night on Friday, which had the older players running drills for the youth. Cedar Grove-Belgium holds Family Night

Schmidt’s 34th victory makes racing history

After two decades competing in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car division, two-time champion Ben Schmidt of Plymouth became the all-time winningest 360 Sprint Car driver in the history of the Plymouth Dirt Track with a commanding win in the 25-lap A-main on Saturday.

Schmidt’s 34th career PDTR 360 Sprint Car main event victory pushed him ahead of three-time track champion Brandon McMullen of Oshkosh to stand alone atop the division’s all-time career feature victory list.

Saukville Saints end season with loss at Slinger

August 12, 2026

One bad inning sent the Saukville Saints to defeat in the final game of the season at Slinger on Aug. 4.

The Slinger Stingers scored six runs in the third inning and beat the Saints, 10-3.

Four hits and two walks keyed the pivotal third inning, which included a two-run single by Chase Elliot.

Port, Grafton tennis players stood out on the court

A few of Port Washington High School’s tennis players had stellar seasons.

No. 1 singles player Nolan Kratz was named to the Glacier Trails Conference first team and was named the team’s most valuable player.

No. 2 singles player Gavin Cain earned honorable mention, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Williams and Ezra Logan.

Cedarburg speedster takes Grafton Lions race title

Cedarburg’s Ryan Haunfelder, 37, (third from left) won the Grafton Lions 5-kilometer run Saturday morning at Centennial Park. He finished in 18 minutes. 30.9 seconds. Grafton’s Brooklyn Echeverria, 20, (left) a cross country runner and 2024 graduate of Grafton High School, won the female race and was second overall, finishing in 21:02.38. Seventy-three runners participated. Grafton High 2026 graduate and the school’s cross-country record-holder Callie Faust, 18, (second from left) was third in 21:07.68.

Hilbelink hits new heights

Tom Race said he was the best player he saw all season.

The Cedar Grove-Belgium High School baseball coach wasn’t alone.

The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association chose junior Ira Hilbelink as the Division 3 Player of the Year.

Hilbelink, a pitcher and shortstop who led the Rockets to the Division 3 championship, hit .557 for the season with 36 RBIs, six home runs, seven triples, nine doubles, 57 runs scored and 24 walks. In 88 at-bats, he struck out just twice.

Port star has the Wright stuff

Port Washington’s O’Neil Wright will play college baseball, but this summer he got one last chance to play as a high-schooler after the Pirates’ season ended.

Wright is the first Port High player in school history to play in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic.

Seventy-two seniors nominated by their coaches are split into four teams — East, West, North and South — and play three games over two days in late June in Oshkosh.

Wright’s East team went 3-0. The East beat the South, 5-1, the West, 6-4, and the North, 12-9.

Rulli was Rockets’ key in softball

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s rebuilding softball team didn’t win many games this season as it was in rebuilding mode, but a senior’s play and intangibles stood out.

First baseman Emmy Rulli was named to the Big East Conference second team.

She hit .286 with six RBIs and a double, walking 11 times and striking out 12. She had a .490 on-base percentage and stole eight bases.

She had a .706 fielding percentage with 24 putouts.
