Grafton Scout helps keep young bicyclists safe

More than 60 children learned how to ride their bicycles safely, had their bikes checked by professionals and their helmets fit correctly and received helmets if needed thanks to 14-year-old Eagle Scout candidate Jacob Butler, who organized Bike Safety Day on Saturday, June 10, at John Long Middle School in Grafton.

Eighty-one earn honors at UW-Madison

Eighty-one area students have earned academic honors for the spring semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Belgium students on the list include Caden Erickson and Marley Mendez, who are enrolled in the School of Education, and Christian Erickson and Marissa Prahl, who are in the College of Letters and Science.

Sakura Emmer of Fredonia is studying in the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences.

Fredonia students Ryan Liermann, Sarah Nehls and Gabrielle Watry are enrolled in the College of Letters and Science.

Area students earn Iowa State honors

Four area students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Iowa State University in Ames.

Matthew M. Janowski of Fredonia, a junior, is majoring in supply chain management.

Sophomore James M. Albrecht of Grafton is studying English.

Baker A. Metz of Port Washington, a sophomore, is majoring in aerospace engineering.

Anna Katherine Russell of Saukville is a junior studying journalism and mass communication.

Drum, bugle corps show set for July 3

The 23rd annual Rotary Music Festival drum and bugle corps show will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 3, at the Cedarburg High School Athletic Field.

The festival will feature performances by six drum and bugle corps, including the Madison Scouts of Madison, Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Ill., Cavaliers of Rosemont, Ill., Blue Stars of La Crosse,  Troopers of Casper, Wyo., and the Colt Cadets of Dubuque, Iowa.

Four of the corps were ranked among the top 12 in world competition last year.

Weeds by another name make gardens fashionable

I’ve never strived for a fashionable garden. Given the sometimes glacial speed at which gardens develop, chasing trends has never seemed like a good idea.

But there are a few areas of my garden that are looking very fashionable right now, that is if you use the new Chelsea Flower Show standard.

Blessing the eternal resting place

Father Patrick Wendt, pastor of St. John XXIII Catholic Parish, (right) blessed the new columbarium and ossuarium at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Port Washington on April 26 while (from left) Parish Communication and Stewardship Chairman Allyson Olivier, Director of Administrative Service Bill Henkle and Cemetery Sexton Steve Ziebell prayed. Amateur radio field day is June 24, 25

The Ozaukee Radio Club and Ozaukee Amateur Radio Emergency Services groups will hold a field day Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25.

The groups will set up emergency communication stations at Pleasant Valley Nature Park in Cedarburg.

The field day is considered a national emergency preparedness event and is intended to demonstrate the role of amateur, or ham, radio operators during an emergency, such as a tornado, that takes down internet, cell phone and email communications.

The park is off Pleasant Valley Road east of Highway I two miles north of Cedarburg.

Random Lake garden tour to be held July 8

The Random Lake Garden tour will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 8.

The tour encompasses four gardens with unique features. Homeowners will be on hand to answer questions.

Tickets are $8 and may be purchased at any of the gardens.

Strawberries add a punch of sweet flavor

Strawberry season is here, providing people with a taste of summer.

Jewels of the beach

When Andrea Cole of Port Washington goes to the beach, she isn’t looking for a suntan or a swim. She’s just looking for her next art project.

Cole is a metalsmith and enamelist who creates jewelry beach glass and stones.

“I find something cool that I like, and I keep it and I make something with it,” she said.

The retired electrical engineer loves the procedure as much as the finished products.
