Parish to bless church foyer, school

A grand opening and blessing of the renovated narthex at St. John XXIII Parish’s St. Peter of Alcantara Church in Port Washington and the parish school will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The blessing and opening will take place after the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

There will be self-guided tours of the building afterward, as well as a picnic.

The construction project began late last fall and allowed the parish to consolidate its two school campuses into one facility and update the St. Peter Church building.

Owner of prime bluff land now wants TIF help

A developer who proposed turning 35 acres of prime south bluff land into Port Washington’s largest subdivision without financial assistance from the city asked the Common Council on Tuesday for $5.25 million in tax incremental financing to pay for infrastructure.

It was an abrupt change for Black Cap Halcyon’s Prairie’s Edge project, which was touted by officials when it was proposed two years ago as a development that, unlike several others in the city, didn’t require public financing.

Driver who tore through Port caught in dumpster

A driver who hit speeds of more than 90 mph as he tore through Port Washington, speeding south in the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Street and flying through a downtown filled with late Friday afternoon traffic, was arrested after he abandoned his car, ran from officers and was found hiding in a maggot-infested dumpster, authorities said. 

5 years, 80,000 volunteer hours later

Started five years ago as an experimental approach to combating apathy among teenagers, Port Washington High School’s Port Pride program has come a long way toward establishing itself as an institution in the school as well as the community.

Just consider the numbers.

Earlier this month, more than 600 Port High students attended an evening assembly to kick off the sixth year of the program. The event was not mandatory unless students wanted to be part of the program that requires them to log 15 hours of community service every semester.

Council puts brakes on firehouse bid process

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday agreed to hold off on seeking a request for proposals to design a new firehouse until its Tuesday, Oct. 1, meeting.

By that time, aldermen hope to have a better idea if the Village of Saukville is receptive to working out a deal that would allow the city to extend sewer service to the former Schanen farm on Highway 33 — the city’s preferred site for the new fire station.

If the council hasn’t heard back from Saukville by its next meeting, aldermen said, they will send out the request for proposals.

Deputies, training credited with saving life

Using skills they honed in a new training program, an Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office sergeant and deputy this summer saved a Town of Grafton woman from committing suicide.

On Sept. 6, they were recognized for their efforts by Sheriff Jim Johnson with a ceremony at the county Justice Center.

On the night of June 22, Sgt. Brad Arndt and Deputy Joseph Tracy were called to a Town of Grafton home where a mother was struggling to control her distraught adult daughter, who was threatening to commit suicide.

Army Corps signs off on breakwater art project

A plan by local yacht designer Bill Prince to turn Port Washington’s breakwater into a work of art is a step closer to becoming reality.

City Administrator Mark Grams told the Harbor Commission last week that the Army Corps of Engineers, which has jurisdiction over the breakwater, has signed off on the idea.

“They’ve given their blessing,” Grams said.

Prince’s idea of beautifying the breakwater by painting the vertical walls on the west end of the structure various shades of blue to reflect the colors of the lake was endorsed by the commission in July.

Port police to crack down on beer garden street parking

Port Washington police are no longer allowing people to park along the road through Upper Lake Park during the beer gardens, Police Chief Kevin Hingiss told the Police and Fire Commission Monday.

“There’s no need to,” he said. “There’s plenty of parking up there. I’ve never seen it that full.”

The change in policy came because so many vehicles were parked along both sides of the road during a late August beer garden that it was difficult to get through the park, he said.

Firm surprises city by cutting price of Possibility Playground work

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday awarded the contract for the resurfacing of Possibility Playground to Bluemmel Maintenance Service after the firm agreed to reduce its price for the work. 

Bluemmel originally bid $227,300 for the project, more than the city’s $200,000 budget, but voluntarily agreed to cut the price of its work by $12,000, Public Works Director Rob Vanden Noven said.

“That was a first,” he said of the credit.
