Port man faces terrorist threat charge after call to school

A 19-year-old Port Washington man who is accused of making a comment about a school being blown up and telling officers his house was booby trapped was charged last week in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with making terrorist threats.

In addition to that felony, Brady J. Peterka, who allegedly scuffled with officers during his arrest, is charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors.

The Greater Port Washington Kiwanis Club held its fourth annual Chili Bowl Sunday, Jan. 26, drawing about 400 people to 11 downtown Port eateries to sample a variety of chilies. Each year, there’s been one standout chili, and this year was no exception, Kiwanis member John Sigwart said.

Family asks city for leeway on dog limit law

Jocelyn and Josh Becker have two rescue dogs and would like to adopt a third, but there’s one problem.

The couple and their children live in the City of Port Washington, which limits the number of pets a family can have to two dogs and two cats.

So Mrs. Becker wrote a letter asking that officials consider increasing the number of dogs a family can have. Their alderman, Pat Tearney, read the letter at the Common Council’s meeting last week.

Transit merger plan to make trip to County Board

Ozaukee County supervisors next month will get a look at the proposed merger of the Ozaukee and Washington county transit programs, even as several questions remain about operational details and its fiscal impact.

The county Public Works Committee recently directed Transit Supt. Joy Neilsen to prepare a draft charter and resolution that would create an Ozaukee-Washington County Transit Commission so that they can be presented to and discussed by the full County Board.

City to pare applicants for administrator next week

As of Tuesday, 20 people had applied to become Port Washington’s new city administrator.

Kevin Brunner, president of public Administration Associates, the firm hired by the city to help in the search for a successor to retiring City Administrator Mark Grams, said that a number of these applicants are local, and there are some candidates “from across the country.”

The deadline for applications was Wednesday, Jan. 29, and Grams said the firm expected a few more to arrived before the deadline.

City clears way for office to move to George Webb building

The Port Washington Plan Commission has paved the way for the former George Webb restaurant on the city’s south side to have new life as a chiropractic clinic.

The commission on Jan. 16 approved a building, site and operational plan that will allow Align Chiropractic to move from its current location at 1032 S. Spring St. to the former restaurant at 1042 Spring St.

The restaurant space in the strip mall has been vacant since about 2016, officials said.

PWHS’ Burke is finalist for top school job in Rhinelander

Port Washington High School Principal Eric Burke, who during his two decades at the school has been a student, teacher, coach and administrator, is one of three finalists for superintendent of the Rhinelander School District.

Burke, who will be interviewed by the Rhinelander School Board next week, said he has also applied for the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District superintendent job. The school board there plans to name finalists for the position on Jan. 29.

A natural gem worth replicating

Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve is the crown jewel in the Ozaukee County park system, County Administrator Jason Dzwinel said.

“I love Lion’s Den,” Dzwinel said. “I love taking my dog out there and running the trails. It’s got beautiful vistas along Lake Michigan, and the access to the shoreline is great. The trails are great.

“And the uniqueness of the gorge itself makes it one of our most impressive county parks.”

Breakwater damage leaves city with bills to pay, concerns

Port Washington officials on Tuesday approved $14,300 in initial repairs to the breakwater, which was seriously damaged in a Jan. 11 gale, and at the same time reviewed plans to repair the far east end of the structure’s walkway with an eye toward ensuring it will be sound in the face of future storms.

The council agreed to pay T.P. Concrete of Fredonia to place a concrete slurry under about 30 feet of the breakwater gateway that was undermined in the storm.

The firm will also move riprap displaced by the storm back into place, Public Works Director Rob Vanden Noven said.
