Home gone, family not forgotten

A blaze fought by a legion of firefighters from four counties that gutted a Town of Grafton home left a family reeling but not forgotten. 

On Monday, Susan LaGrange returned to what’s left of her house at 585 High Bluff Dr. to discover that somebody had set up a Christmas tree decorated with lights and ornaments in her yard.

Joint county transit system plan picks up speed

Officials in Washington and Ozaukee counties are hoping to draft a charter to create a joint transit commission that would oversee the public transit systems in both counties.

Members of the Ozaukee County Public Works Committee directed county Transit Supt. Joy Neilson to draft a charter for them to review and possibly vote on when they meet next on Dec. 19.

The charter would have to be approved by both county boards.

Port’s downtown Christmas celebration draws a crowd

The holiday season got off to a rousing start in downtown Port Washington Saturday with the annual Christmas on the Corner celebration, which included merchant sales, children’s activities, live reindeer, caroling, a tree lighting, parade and fireworks.

County hires firm to study new facility at Lasata campus

Ozaukee County supervisors on the Health and Human Services Committee voted Nov. 27 to award a contract of $8,000 to a Wauwatosa architectural firm to help locate and design a community based residential facility (CBRF) to add to the Lasata Senior Living Campus in Cedarburg.

AG Architecture was the lowest bid of three firms.

The firm would assist with pre-design services such as analyzing functions and space needs, estimating costs and projecting a construction time line.

Legion of firefighters battle Town of Grafton house fire

A legion of firefighters from throughout Ozaukee County as well as the surrounding areas fought a four-alarm blaze that gutted a large house in the Town of Grafton Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called to the sprawling home on High Bluff Drive next to Lion’s Den George Nature Preserve at 4:49 p.m., and by the time they arrived the house was ablaze, Grafton Fire Chief William Rice said.

People who were in the house at the time escaped, although the fate of several cats was unknown Wednesday night.

City threatens lawsuit over late land payments

The developer of the proposed Prairie’s Edge subdivision — the largest to be built in Port Washington — is about $45,000 in arrears in mortgage payments to the city for the south bluff land on which the subdivision is to be built, City Administrator Mark Grams said.

The Common Council on Tuesday met in closed session to discuss the possibility of taking Black Cap Halcyon to court to recover the back payments and ensure it will receive future mortgage payments from the firm, Grams said.

Controversial redistricting resolution divides board

In front of a packed meeting room, Ozaukee County Board supervisors put off voting on a resolution that if passed would ask county voters whether the state should create a nonpartisan process for redistricting legislative and congressional districts.

On a 16-10 vote, supervisors voted to delay voting on the resolution until they meet on Jan. 15, 2020, to give Corporation Counsel Rhonda Gordon more time to research the issue.

Achieving his American dream

Thanksgiving was special for Port Washington resident Viktor Petrov this year.

It was the first time the Bulgarian native celebrated the holiday as a U.S. citizen. 

Petrov took the oath of citizenship less than a week earlier, on Friday, Nov. 22, in a ceremony at the federal courthouse in Milwaukee attended by his wife Michelle, her mother and Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell.

“It was great. I was excited all day,” he said. “This was the next step of the journey we started four years ago.”

Proposed six-lane I-43 project picks up steam

Plans to widen I-43 in Ozaukee County to six lanes are moving forward, with construction to potentially start in 2022, Ozaukee County officials were informed this week.

Preliminary engineering has been completed on the plan and an informational meeting will be held in January to provide updates to local officials on design, environmental overview and construction schedule, according to a letter from the state Department of Transportation presented to the County Board of Supervisors this week.

Storm-driven lake inundates marina

In a year when rising Lake Michigan waters have become normal, the swells pushed onto the western shore of the lake by this weekend’s fierce weather surprised even seasoned observers.

“That had to be a surge of two feet off the lake,” Harbormaster Dennis Cherny said. “It was so high it was over the finger piers and walkway in the north slip.”

And the force of the water pushed up large sections of concrete decking, each weighing 80 pounds or so, that make up the dock in the main marina, he said.
