District receives waiver to start school early

The Cedar Grove-Belgium School District has been granted a waiver from the State Department of Public Instruction to start the 2023-24 school year a day early.

Supt. Chad Brakke told the School Board last week that the waiver to start on Aug. 31 has been approved. State law allows schools to start Sept. 1 or later and requires a waiver to start earlier.

Electors in the district approved allowing the district to apply for a waiver last month, and the School Board also gave its blessing.

Deputy town clerk appointed to shadow Murphy

The Town of Belgium will be getting a new clerk for the first time in 20 years, and officials want the newbie to hit the ground running.

Anne Nord was appointed last week as deputy clerk to work with Clerk Ginger Murphy, who isn’t seeking re-election in April. Murphy will show Nord how to run the Feb. 21 primary election so she can easier handle the April 4 election.

Nord will be paid $20 per hour to shadow Murphy, Town Chairman Tom Winker said.

Town grants land division, rezone request

A land division and rezoning request for what had become an embattled property in the Town of Belgium has been resolved.

The issue of a fine for having several illegal mobile homes parked on the property is ongoing.

The Town Board on Monday approved allowing Dennis Dahm to separate 10 acres from his 40.65-acre parcel at 2046 Jay Rd. and rezone the 10 acres from A-1 to A-2, per a recommendation by the Plan Commission.

Meet the American Revolution participants in person

Angie Wachter’s seventh-grade students at Cedar Grove-Belgium Middle School recently conducted research on figures from the American Revolution era, wrote essays and delivered speeches on their people in a museum-type setting to fourth and sixth-graders. “I wanted the students to really embrace and understand how their historical figure made an impact in American History.

Two school communities step up to help family of 4-year-old with leukemia

Divine Savior Catholic School in Fredonia is hosting a fundraiser starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, to benefit the family of Cole Janke.

Last September, Cole, 4, was diagnosed with acute lymphobastic leukemia and spent a week at Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa.

Treatment is continuing and requires trips to Children’s and the MACC Fund Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Cole is the son of Rose Janke, an English teacher at Cedar Grove-Belgium High School for the past 14 years. The family lives in Fredonia, where Cole attends Divine Savior Catholic.

It took all of one month for the Town of Belgium to hear from constituents about the new hours at the dump.

Town Chairman Tom Winker said he heard one complaint, and Clerk Ginger Murphy said she had two from people who work on Saturday mornings.

The town changed its dump schedule starting this year to 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The previous schedule had the dump open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

First responders honored

The American Legion Melvin Wester Post 412 recently recognized two first responders. Sarah Heisler was named 2022 Legion EMS of the Year. She is an emergency medical responder with the Belgium Fire Department. Dan Birenbaum was named Firefighter of the Year for the fundraising campaign for the department’s new self-contained breathing apparatuses.

10th annual Moonlight Meltdown is April 15

The Snow Runners LTD annual run, walk and dinner hits double digits this year.

Moonlight Meltdown turns 10 on April 15.

The event starts at Kyotes Bar and Grill in Belgium, offering five-kilometer and 10k routes through the streets of Belgium, ending at Kyotes, 129 Sprint St. A sunset safari hybrid trail run includes a five-mile road course through Harrtington Beach State Park on the mowed-grass snowmobile trail that includes elevation changes. The runs are chip timed.

After the runs and walks, music, food, raffles and awards will be available at Kyotes.

New charter school close to landing facility

After looking far and wide across the land encompassing the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District for a building to house a new charter school, a place may have been found right next to campus.

The district last week was close to inking a financial agreement to buy First Evangelical Presbyterian Church next to the middle and elementary schools.

“My goal would be to have next month’s Governance Board meeting there,” Supt. Chad Brakke told the board on Jan. 26.

Fire Department to raise money for helmets with cornhole tourney, dinner

The Belgium Fire Department will hold a Fire in the Hole Cornhole Tournament and spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Feb. 11, to raise money for new helmets.

The event includes 50/50 raffles and a raffle to win a set of cornhole boards. Beer and soda will be available for purchase.

The tournament starts at 3 p.m. at the Belgium fire house, 195 Commerce St. It offers 100% payout in adult and student tournaments.

The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students in grades seven through 12.
