Turkeys are a lot of things ...

Turkeys take center stage this time of year, when nearly every dinner table will sport one as the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving feast.

But for Josh Platner and his son, Tayten Platner, 13, and step son, Dylan Dasher, 15, turkeys are the star of the show year-round.

That’s because they have raised turkeys with the Jay Road 4-H Club and shown them at the Ozaukee County Fair for the last few years, winning ribbons and selling the birds for hundreds of dollars in the process.

Access to Casey’s site comes with sticker shock

If a Casey’s General Store is to be built at the northwest corner of the intersection of Highways 33 and LL in Port Washington, it’s going to cost about $274,000 just to gain access to the property, the state Department of Transportation has told Ozaukee County officials.

Word on the fee comes well over a year after Iowa-based Casey’s reached an agreement with the county to buy the approximately six-acre site for $500,000 that was created when the cloverleaf interchange there was demolished in 2011 and replaced with a round about.

Parking gripe prompts debate over work truck restrictions

Should people be able to park their commercial vehicles in residential areas of Port Washington?

That was the question debated by the City of Port Washington Plan Commission last week.

Kent Olson, 379 E. Whitefish Rd., told the commission his neighbor parks his work truck, which has a crane and ladder mounted on it, at the back of his lot, in a driveway next to the lot line. 

A fence separates the properties, Olson said, but doesn’t hide the truck from view.

Two of school board’s longest serving members say they’re up for another term

Two of the longest-serving Port Washington-Saukville School Board members said this week they will run for re-election in April.

Sara McCutcheon, who has held a Village of Saukville seat on the board for 22 years and is the senior member of the board, will seek another term, she said. 

McCutcheon was appointed to the board in August 1997 to fill a vacancy, then elected the following year.

A memorial reborn

Work to rebuild the War Memorial at the Ozaukee County Justice Center in Port Washington (top photo) was recently completed. Visitors are greeted by an engraved stone that pays tribute to county soldiers killed in the line of duty since World War I (left photo), while other stones have the names of the war dead engraved on them (lower left). As part of the project, the names of three area soldiers were added to the memorial.

Board unanimously OKs Port’s fourth TIF district

Port Washington‘s fourth tax incremental financing district is reality.

The city’s Joint Review Board unanimously approved the district Friday, with members calling the proposed senior apartments planned for a former trailer park on South Spring Street an ideal TIF project.

“It seems to be the perfect project for it,” board member Rick Nelson said.

The TIF district encompasses only the 2-26-acre former trailer park, which the city purchased in 2007 and which Horizon Development wants to purchase. 

Firm’s request sparks worries about large signs along I-43

When is a sign more than a sign? When it’s an oversized sign to be erected on a lot off Highway LL on Port Washington’s north side requested by a business that wants it large enough to be read from I-43.

The Port Washington Plan Commission  last week debated a request for a 360-square-foot monument sign to be erected just south of the Country Inn and Suites, where Matt Nelson is considering constructing an office building for his American Advantage Insurance business at 350 Seven Hills Rd.

Search for new administrator to cost Port $10,900

The Port Washington Personnel Committee on Monday recommended spending more than $10,000 to a search firm to find the next city administrator.

The committee unanimously recommended hiring Public Administration Associates, a Whitewater firm, to help find a successor to Mark Grams, who is retiring in February.

PAA was one of four executive search firms that submitted proposals to the city, and committee members said its proposal stood out.

“I like their approach to recruiting,” Ald. Deb Postl, a member of the committee, said. 

A gift of food for Thanksgiving

While many people worry about eating too much on Thanksgiving, others wory they won’t have enough to eat on the holiday or the other 364 days of the year, which was the reason for a recent gathering at Bernie’s Fine Meats in Port Washington. There, Jim Schmit, co-owner of Schmit Bros. (front), donated 100 turkeys to the Port Washington and Saukville Community food pantries, as is tradition for the Saukville auto dealership.
