Grafton police investigating death of man found in home early Friday

The Grafton Police Department is investigating the death of a 34-year-old man whose body was found in a house in the 900 block of Spring Street early Friday, May 3.

Officers who were called to the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Spring Street at 2:20 a.m. discovered an 18-year-old woman in need of medical attention, according to a police department press release.

Officers learned the woman had come from the house on Spring Street where officers discovered the man’s body, according to police.

Port panel calls for new west-side firehouse

Port Washington’s fire station task force met Monday to finalize its findings for the city’s Police and Fire Commission, recommending after three months of study that the city should construct a new firehouse that is estimated to cost $4 million to $6 million on Grand Avenue west of Highway LL.

But the breakneck speed of the task force may slow down in the coming month as it presents its findings to the Police and Fire Commission and Common Council, which will not only have to decide whether to move ahead with the project but also how to fund it.

Stewardship fund debate hits home

If you ask Tom Stolp, executive director of the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, what the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has meant to the area, the answer is simple.

“I really don’t even know what Ozaukee and Washington counties would look like if we didn’t have this 30-year-old program,” Stolp said.

“It would be a different community altogether.”

But Stolp is concerned about the future of the stewardship program, which is scheduled to sunset in 2020.

Judge shocked by image of minivan in house sends driver to jail

In a crash that defied description, a photo of a minivan stuck wheels-first into the side of a house 15 feet off the ground was Exhibit 1 in a case that ended last week in Ozaukee County Circuit Court.

“I honestly don’t know where to begin in terms of the sheer shock this court had in seeing the photo of your vehicle launched into this house,” Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Sandy Williams told Alva P. Richards, the 36-year-old Waubeka man who was driving the minivan, during his sentencing hearing last week.

Officials ask Evers to revisit marine sanctuary plan

Port Washington Mayor Marty Becker and Tourism Executive Director Kathy Tank, along with officials from Sheboygan, Manitowoc and Two Rivers, met with Gov. Tony Evers in Madison last week in an effort to resume the process of creating a national shipwreck sanctuary that would stretch along the Lake Michigan Coast from Ozaukee County north to Two Rivers.

Becker said he was encouraged by the meeting, noting Evers “seemed very receptive.”

County to pay $55,000 for Glendale cop injured in bust

The Ozaukee County Board on Wednesday approved paying $55,000 to settle a worker’s compensation claim stemming from a drug bust and car chase during which a Glendale police officer was injured.

The case stems from a May 9, 2014, drug bust in which Larry X. Pettigrew, now 28, sold heroin to an Ozaukee County Sheriff’s undercover deputy in the parking lot of the Culver’s restaurant in Mequon, according to a criminal complaint.

Getting their hands dirty and loving it

Students at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Washington got a hands-on lesson in the environment last week as they helped plant more than 400 seedlings under the supervision of a city crew.

The seventh-graders got down and dirty as they planted, teacher Kelly Evenson said, “and they loved it.”

“The kids were saying, ‘I love getting my fingers in the dirt,’” she said. “They came back with muddy clothes, but they were so excited about what they did.

“They really take pride in this.”

Port Blues Factory plan tweaked, CEO named

Developer Gertjan van den Broek on Tuesday announced that he is tweaking plans for the proposed Blues Factory entertainment complex on Port Washington’s lakefront to include second-story offices and has hired Matthew Hermans as chief executive officer of the business.

Construction of the Blues Factory is expected to begin by next April with a grand opening in spring 2021, van den Broek said, adding he is making changes to the design of the building, both to accommodate renovations to the adjoining Port Harbor Center and to help deal with rising construction costs.
