Narrow streets continue to drive debate among officials

Port Washington’s policy of narrowing streets when it rebuilds them, which has been in effect for the last 20 years, came under fire last week from Ald. Deb Postl, who said she fears it is sending bicyclists onto the city sidewalks.

Bikers, she said, don’t feel safe riding on the narrow roads.

“I see more and more bicycles on sidewalks,” Postl said. “I think that is causing a safety issue in the city. I think the narrowing of the streets needs to be reviewed.”

Utility sees solar power potential in PWHS roof

We Energies would pay the Port Washington-Saukville School District about $8,700 a year to install and maintain a 750 solar panel system on top of the new southern end of the high school, a utility official told School Board members Monday.

“You would basically be leasing us your rooftop,” Richard Stasik, director of state regulatory affairs for We Energies and a Port Washington resident, told members of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. 

“It’s a completely turnkey solution. The district doesn’t have to invest one penny in the installation of the facility.”

A childhood cancer success story

It’s amazing what a dog can do.

In Joe Dean’s case, his book “A Dog Named Hope” has raised more than $50,000 for childhood cancer research and support during the past two years.

And that amount’s sure to climb with the release of a stuffed “Hope” dog that will not only compliment the book but also be a companion for youngsters.

“Our dream was always to do a companion puppy,” Dean said. “We felt the dog in the book was so adorable it would be great to bring it to life.”

Revised townhouse plan called better but not great

A revised concept plan and design for a townhouse development that would be built on Jackson Street in downtown Port Washington got the nod of approval from the city’s Design Review Board last week.

The board recommended the concept be approved but noted that the final design should still be tweaked before it is submitted.

“You’ve come a long way. You’re definitely much more on track,” board member Mike Ehrlich, an architect, said. “I do think this brings in the materials and language of what’s around here. I would like to see a little more refinement. 

New possibilities for a Port playground

In an effort reminiscent of the creation of Possibility Playground 11 years ago, volunteers on Tuesday began work to refresh the play area in Upper Lake Park. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed to help build benches, a tree house for the twisty slide and other amenities.

Tall ship, kites to highlight Port’s Day by the Lake

The tall ship Denis Sullivan will return to the Port Washington harbor for one last visit this weekend— a visit that will be bolstered by a kite festival to create A Day by the Lake.

“There’s something for everyone — food trucks, sails on the Sullivan, chalk art and more,” Port Washington Main Street Executive Director Melissa Alexander said. 

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, although sails on the Sullivan will be held at 9 a.m. and 1 and 5 p.m. Deck tours will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. An additional sail will be held at noon Sunday, Sept.29.

Parish to bless church foyer, school

A grand opening and blessing of the renovated narthex at St. John XXIII Parish’s St. Peter of Alcantara Church in Port Washington and the parish school will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The blessing and opening will take place after the 10:30 a.m. Mass.

There will be self-guided tours of the building afterward, as well as a picnic.

The construction project began late last fall and allowed the parish to consolidate its two school campuses into one facility and update the St. Peter Church building.

Owner of prime bluff land now wants TIF help

A developer who proposed turning 35 acres of prime south bluff land into Port Washington’s largest subdivision without financial assistance from the city asked the Common Council on Tuesday for $5.25 million in tax incremental financing to pay for infrastructure.

It was an abrupt change for Black Cap Halcyon’s Prairie’s Edge project, which was touted by officials when it was proposed two years ago as a development that, unlike several others in the city, didn’t require public financing.

Driver who tore through Port caught in dumpster

A driver who hit speeds of more than 90 mph as he tore through Port Washington, speeding south in the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Street and flying through a downtown filled with late Friday afternoon traffic, was arrested after he abandoned his car, ran from officers and was found hiding in a maggot-infested dumpster, authorities said. 

5 years, 80,000 volunteer hours later

Started five years ago as an experimental approach to combating apathy among teenagers, Port Washington High School’s Port Pride program has come a long way toward establishing itself as an institution in the school as well as the community.

Just consider the numbers.

Earlier this month, more than 600 Port High students attended an evening assembly to kick off the sixth year of the program. The event was not mandatory unless students wanted to be part of the program that requires them to log 15 hours of community service every semester.
