Son escapes mom’s fate in Port Washington drug case

The son of a woman sentenced last month to prison for running a drug house across from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington was charged with the same crime but won’t suffer the same fate as his mother.

Blaine G. Koziol, 24, who had been charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, pleaded guilty Monday to an amended charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Steve Cain withheld a sentence and placed Koziol on probation for one year. 

Last month, Cain sentenced Koziol’s mother, Sandra J. Koziol, 59, to three years in prison followed by years of supervised release. He also sentenced her to six additional  years in prison but stayed that part of the sentence, which means she’ll only serve that time if she violates the conditions of her release.

The Koziols were arrested after the Ozaukee County Special Response Team raided their house at 110 E. Van Buren St. at 6 a.m. Feb. 2 to find Blaine G. Koziol and his girlfriend in the basement.

In Sandra Koziol’s upstairs bedroom, authorities found a glass pipe and bong, methamphetamine residue on a mirror and bags commonly used to package drugs.

In the basement, where Blaine Koziol lived, authorities found pipes, bongs, BHO wax, a digital scale with marijuana residue on it and a money counter.  A safe found in a basement closet contained $7,706 in cash, 43.2 grams of marijuana and BHO wax, according to a criminal complaint.

Both Blaine and Sandra Koziol were released from jail in lieu of $5,000 bail shortly after their arrests, but a month later Sandra Koziol was arrested again after authorities searched her home on March 16 and found it strewn with drugs and syringes.

She was charged with several other felonies but her son was not implicated in any crimes connected to the March 16 search.

While her son chose a plea deal, Sandra Koziol fought the charges against her stemming from the March 16 search and lost.

An Ozaukee County jury convicted her on Aug. 10 of four felonies — possession of heroin and methamphetamine and two counts of bail jumping.

Last month, she pleaded guilty to two other felonies — maintaining a drug trafficking place and possession of methamphetamine stemming from the Feb. 2 search.

Also living at the Koziol’s house at the time of the Feb. 2 search was Austyn R. Wolford, 25, who on Monday pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
