Honoring a Voice of Democracy

Port Washington High School senior Kelly Ball was honored recently as the local winner of the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5373 and its Auxiliary. Ball’s winning essay addressed the question “Is America Today What the Founding Fathers Envisioned?” Ball moved on to the district contest, where she took fifth place out of roughly 3,000 entries. Present at last week’s ceremony were (from left) Diane Burkhalter, chairman of the Auxiliary’s Committee for Youth Activities and Scholarships; Janet Ball and her daughter Kelly, who held the certificates and scholarship funds she won in the contest; High School Principal Thad Gabrielse; Post 5373 Commander Craig Heatwole;  and VFW Post Adjutant Jim Schmidt.                                                   Photo by Sam Arendt
