Snowmobiler injured in crash

A 57-year-old Town of Cedarburg man was transported by a Flight for Life helicopter last Friday evening after he crashed his snowmobile on a trail just south of Cedar Sauk Road in the Town of Saukville.

According to a press release from the Saukville Fire Department, firefighters and emergency medical service crews were called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. Feb. 19.

Based on reports from the scene, Flight for Life was dispatched to the scene before the fire department reached the scene, the press release said.

Saukville crews used the department’s four-wheel utility vehicle to reach the driver, whom family members identified as Scott Lemke.

Lemke was thrown from his vehicle and was located a “significant distance” from the road, suffering “serious” but unidentified injuries, the press release stated.

On Tuesday, family members said Lemke was in stable condition after undergoing surgery for neck and back injuries.

Ozaukee County Department of Natural Resources Game Warden Anthony Young said an eyewitness reported that the driver was going at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a turn, causing the snowmobile to flip, throwing him from the snowmobile.

“The witness said he blew past them and couldn’t make the turn,” Young said.

Lemke was traveling with one other person who was farther behind, Young said.

Other units responding to the scene included those from the Village of Grafton Fire Department, Port Washington Fire/Rescue, and Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
