Giving thanks with a gift of food

Making sure that even those who can’t afford to put food on their tables have turkeys to dine on this Thanksgiving, the North Shore Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (above) and Schmit Bros. auto dealership in Saukville (left) donated birds to area food pantries. Gathered at Blau’s Saukville Meats last week were Turkey Federation members (from left) Will Hollrith, Pete Baumann, Mark Blau, Bryan Medinger and Ted Fischer. The organization gave 68 turkeys to the Port Washington, Saukville Community, Family Sharing and St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish food pantries. There was no gathering at Bernie’s Fine Meats in Port Washington this year because of the pandemic, but Schmit Bros. carried on its tradition of donating 100 turkeys. Gathered at the meat market last year were (front, holding turkeys) Jim Schmit, co-owner of Schmit Bros., and Chris Flint, former executive director of the Port Washington Food Pantry, (middle row, from left) Tom Caravella, Saukville Community Food Pantry Director Mark Gierach, Chuck Prendergast, (back row) Bernie’s owner Steve Bennett, John Zalewski and Randy Lanser.
