An al fresco pinewood derby in Grafton

Cub Scout Pack 3839 of Grafton, which had to postpone its pinewood derby in March because of the pandemic, found a beautiful day last month to hold the races outside in the Veterans Memorial Park pavilion with the picturesque Grafton millpond as a backdrop. The winners were (top photo, from left) Archer Nielsen, fourth place; Nathan Hermann, second place; Nolan Hoctor, first place; Liam Hoctor, third place; and Chase Crowell, fifth place. Not pictured is Connor Arndt, who won the Most Fuel Efficient Award. The Lucas Coppersmith Memorial Award for the most creative car was presented to Luke Manthei by Lucas’ father Kyle Coppersmith (above left). Lucas died of leukemia in 2019. About 30 Scouts, who crafted an impressive fleet of cars (above right), participated in the event.
