Trick-or-treating hours set

Trick or treat in Belgium will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25.

The Village Board on Monday discussed the issue in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“For me, it’s up to the parents if they want to have their kids out there. It’s up to every individual if they want to hand out candy,” Village President Pete Anzia said.

Trustee Rose Sauers agreed.

“I don’t know that we should legislate in this regard,” she said.

Trustee Sarah Heisler asked if anyone considered holding trick or treat at the same time as other area communities to reduce visitors and thus the spread of germs.

“We’re going to get kids from all over coming to Belgium that day,” she said.

Trustee Don Gotcher agreed, but said he understood it’s too late to do this year. He suggested checking into the idea next year.

The board didn’t vote on the issue.

Village Clerk Julie Lesar said she has been getting calls regularly about trick or treating, and advises people to use their discretion and turn on their porch lights if they are participating.

The Washington Ozaukee Health Department issued guidance for trick or treat, advising people to stay local, stay home if they have Covid-19 symptoms, practice social distancing outside, wear a mask and dress for the weather. It suggests avoiding haunted houses, large gatherings such as parties and festivals, indoor celebrations and socializing at bars.

“It’s basically common sense,” Anzia said.

Cedar Grove is holding trick or treat from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, according to its website.
