New company to handle e-cycle day

A new company will provide dumpsters for the Town and Village of Belgium’s e-cycle day this year.

Supr. Tom Bichler told the Town Board on Monday that Keirmar of Fredonia will bring two 20-yard dumpsters and will provide staff free of charge.

“They contacted me, actually. We’re going to try them,” Bichler said. 

“For that price, we can’t not try them,” Supr. Bill Janeshek said.

Veolia had charged to bring dumpsters the past couple of years.

The town and village will split $5,000 in savings.

E-cycle day is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16, at the town’s transfer site, 1215 Jay Road.

In other recycling news, Bichler said the town has started handing out new permit numbers to residents visiting the dump. About a quarter of them have been distributed, he siad.

“We’re tyring to eliminate people coming to our dump that don’t live in our township,” Bichler said.

He asks residents to see Ron Swihart at the dump to get their new permits and hang them on their rearview mirrors.

The town also is examining opening the dump an hour earlier on Saturdays in summer.

Town Chairman Tom Winker said he was approached by someone who requested the earlier hours.

“A lot of people down along by the lake want the weekends for themselves,” he said. “People want to get their things done on Saturday and maybe want to leave town.”

It was suggested that summer hours run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., rather than opening at 9 a.m.

The longer hours would only be in place from the first Saturday in May through the last Saturday in September.

The Wednesday night summer hours from 5 to 8 p.m. would remain the same.

The Board didn’t take action since the issue wasn’t on the agenda. It may act on the item in April.
