Magnificent seven

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s wrestling team didn’t crown a sectional champion at the Division 3 sectional at Dodgeland on Saturday, but the Rockets will be represented well at the individual state tournament in Madison this week.

Seven of the 10 Rockets advanced. Four took second places and three took thirds.

“We had a really good day on Saturday,” coach Trevor Peterson said.

Brett Feind (32-12) at 220 pounds took third place and Josh TeStroete (38-5) at 160 took second to punch their tickets to Madison for the second straight season.

Cael Erickson (40-3) at 120 pounds, Quinn Hoopman (34-10) at 132 and Tyler Kowalkowski (16-6) at 138 took seconds.

Ben Anzia (34-9) at 182 pounds and Aaron Duenk (30-13) at 195 took thirds.

Erickson pinned Gwen Golueke (18-10) of Poynette in 35 seconds and won an 8-0 major decision over top-three ranked Javis Pinter of Kenosha Christian Life (47-3) before losing a 7-3 decision to Henry Amborn (7-2) of Catholic Central in the final.

Peteron said Erickson was up by a point with about 30 seconds left before the match was stopped because someone was bleeding. When it restarted, Amborn blasted Erickson for a take down. He tried to scramble out of it but Amborn got a nearfall.

“That’s why the score was bigger than it looked,” Peterson said.

On Thursday in Madison, Erickson has to beat sophomore Noah Krahenbuhl of Pecatonica/Argyle (26-4) to advance.

Hoopman pinned Drake Felder (23-20) of Dodgeland in 3:14 and won a 7-0 decision over Brant Cracraft (28-13) of Mishicot before Tristan Hammen (42-6) of Randaom Lake won an 8-3 sudden victory in the finals.

On Thursday, Hoopman has to beat sophomore Benett Schramski (30-16) of Cumberland to advance.

Kowalkowski pinned Charles Glewen (16-15) of Laconia in 1:40 and beat Harley Rivera (37-13) of Kenosha Christian Life in a 12-8 decision before being pinned by Luke Pulvermacher (36-8) of Princeton in 4:51.

“Tyler’s just an unbelievable athlete period,” Peterson said.

Kowalkowski has to beat junior Jacob Rogers of (35-7) of New Lisbon to advance.

TeStroete won a 16-6 major decision over Drew Torres (26-5) of  Montello and won a 5-2 decision over Brandon Stelzer (37-4) of Reedsville before losing a 5-1 decision to Grayson Vandenbush (42-2) of Campbellsport.

TeStroete on Thursday has to beat junior Dylan Horstmeyer (43-10) of Marshall to advance.

Anzia lost a 4-2 decision to Tye Bader (33-11) of Dodgeland before pinning Austin Lambrecht (31-17) of Mishicot in 4:11 and beating Brock Upson (32-12) of Random Lake in a 5-2 decision for third, avenging a 5-3 overtime loss at the regional.

“Ben thought no way is he going to lose,” Peterson said.

Anzia on Thursday has to beat junior Ethan Tegels (38-5) of Cadott to advance.

Duenk pinned Mason Peters (12-12) of Westfield Area in 4:55 and then was pinned by Evan Grubbs (44-1) of Kehosha Christian Life in 43 seconds.

He then beat Keagan Stelzer (22-6) of Lourdes Academy in a 7-5 decision and beat Daniel Saylor (32-12) of Markesan in a 10-4 decision for third. He was pinned by Paul Wery (34-10) of Kewaunee in 5:14 for second place.

Being behind 2018 graduate Bryce Morgan the last couple of years didn’t allow Duenk to get a full season on varsity, and he weighs 170 wrestling in the 195-pound category, Peterson said.

“He had a huge day. Making the state tournament is very impressive,” Peterson said.

On Thursday, Duenk has to beat junior Aaron Ragels (35-10) of Fennimore to advance.

Feind was beaten in a 5-3 sudden victory by Frank Koeppel (34-15) of Mishicot.

It was a common fiend for Feind, who lost to Koeppel three times this season.

But Peterson was impressed that his senior bounced back. He pinned Sean Bollinger (10-12) of Princeton in 30 seconds and then won an 8-1 decision over Zach Descourouez (42-8) of Kenosha Christian Life for third place.

On Thursday, Feind has to beat junior Connor Westfall (30-6) of Athens to advance.

Peterson said Sawyer DeRuyter at 170, Markus Ramirez at 285 and Dylan Teunissen at 152 didn’t wrestle badly but had tough draws.

“Hats off to them for making it as far as they did. They’re all underclassmen and hopefully be back next year,” he said.

Random Lake won the sectional with 135 points. Reedsville was second with 102. The Rockets were third with 96.

Ozaukee was 17th with 8.5 points.

Cael Large (20-7) at 120 pounds lost a 13-7 decision to Pinter for third place and a trip to Madison. Anthony Pawling lost two matches at 145 pounds.
