Starters on the Port Washington High School football team were pulled about as fast as the Pirates’ air-raid offense operates in a home playoff-opening drubbing of South Milwaukee, 51-7, last Friday.
Jack Bunyan, the state’s passing yards leader, went 7-for-7 for 188 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first quarter. Aedyn Brownmiller caught three passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Kade Kintop caught three balls for 83 yards and a score. Mason Schwanz ran six times for 30 yards and two scores.
Kiya Sullivan returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown. Grayson Allen hit a 37-yard field goal and had five touchbacks on six kickoffs. Eyob Sullivan recovered a fumble and Elijah James blocked a punt.
“Really efficient, really good,” coach John Bunyan said. “We had the second-team defense in during the second quarter.”
Port led, 42-0, after one quarter and didn’t have a possession in the second quarter thanks to the running clock. When teams are 35 points or more apart after one quarter, the clock doesn’t stop except for timeouts, scores or injuries.
The Pirates, Bunyan said, didn’t play down to their competition.
“We had a great week of practice. We played to our standard, which I was really happy about. You can easily go the other way,” he said.
South Milwaukee finished 4-6. Undefeated Port hosts Luxemburg-Casco (7-3) on Friday, Oct. 30.
For Luxemburg-Casco, Eli Derenne is 86-for-168 passing for 1,065 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He ran for 1,381 yards and 20 touchdowns on 120 carries, averaging 11.5 yards per run. Ben Klass has run 130 times for 691 yards and 14 scores. Ethan Werner has 120 tackles and nobody else has more than 48. The Spartans have recovered 12 fumbles and made eight interceptions.
For Port, Bunyan is 164-for-259 passing for 3,011 yards with 37 scores and nine interceptions. Kintop has 54 catches for 1,115 yards and 12 scores. Brownmiller has 38 catches for 886 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Kiya Sullivan caught 30 balls for 596 yards and eight scores. Schwanz has 91 carries for 441 yards and six scores.
Austin Knapp has 94 tackles and ThiLar Goodman has 73. Port has recovered seven fumbles and made 10 interceptions.
