They hadn’t been scored on since before the Milwaukee Brewers clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs, and the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School football team kept the streak going last Friday.
The Rockets put away visiting Valders early in a 43-0 Division 6 playoff win.
It was the Rockets’ fifth straight shutout. Defensive coordinator Jason Klein’s unit hasn’t yielded a point since a 26-6 win at Oostburg on Sept. 18.
“We knew what we had to stop and we did just that,” senior linebacker Josh Anzia said. “The bond and how much we talk with one another during practice really makes us trust that we’ve got each other’s back.”
RJ Griffin had a team-high six tackles and was one of four players with a sack. Nolan Anzia had five tackles and a sack. Austin Knapp had four tackles and a sack, and Josh Anzia had four tackles.
“It was really, really fun to watch them. RJ was so fast off the edge. Their left tackle couldn’t block him,” coach Dan Schreurs said. “Noah (Teunissen) and Knapp were locking down the other side.”
The Rockets scored on the first drive of the game. Knapp burst free for a 39-yard score and finished with 113 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Near the end of the half, the Valders’ quarterback had to leave for a play after a big hit, and the backup got spun around and tried to throw the ball but tossed it backward out of the end zone for a safety.
Griffin Knight returned the ensuing kick 68 yards for a score.
It was 33-0 at halftime and Schreurs began to rest his starters.
Fullback Alex Geib, a national weightlifting champion, finished with 83 yards and two scores on five carries.
“Geib showed some moves and some speed too,” Schreurs said. “That’s the best I’ve seen him run all season.”
Noah Peterson made two field goals, including a career-long 49-yarder.
Fog swapped from heavy to light throughout the game. Schreurs said it reached the point where the coaches in the booth were telling him down and distance since they could see the sticks on the other side of the field.
He said he learned to check with his coaches after a foggy home game against Manitowoc Lutheran last year when an official told him it was third down when it was fourth.
The No. 3-seeded Rockets, 8-2, play at No. 2 Kewaunee, 8-2, on Friday, Oct. 30. The Storm have won seven straight, including 40-7 over Loyal/Greenwood last Friday.
Diesel Bosdeck has gone 105-for-159 passing for 1,144 yards with 14 scores and nine interceptions. He ran 50 times for 421 yards and seven touchdowns. Blake Temme has 631 yards and 10 touchdowns on 114 carries.
Blake Bortolini has 85 tackles. The Storm have recovered seven fumbles and made 11 interceptions.
For the Rockets, Knapp has 997 yards and eight scores on 136 carries. Knight has 420 yards and six scores on 46 runs. Evan Halleman is 25-for-52 passing for 294 yards with six scores and four interceptions.
Josh Anzia leads with 89 tackles. RJ Griffin has 67. The Rockets have forced five fumbles and picked off six passes.
“Kewaunee is always good. They’re solid,” Schreurs said. “We’ll go up there and we’ll play Rocket football.”
