LETTER: Tiffany supported bill that put pregnant women’s lives at risk
To Ozaukee Press:
I support David Crowley for governor because of a frightening personal experience. I had an ectopic pregnancy. Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany coauthored a 2024 budget proposal that endorsed a bill extending personhood rights to fetuses and embryos. That would have made the surgery to save my life prosecutable murder. Young women have died in other states with restrictive abortion laws.
Tiffany co-sponsored the “Heartbeat Bill” and other national abortion-limitation measures. This directly interferes with doctors’ ability to make emergency, life-saving humanitarian decisions with women after that heartbeat timeline.
In the recent televised debate, David Crowley said, “The most personal decisions about pregnancy and health belong to the person facing them, in consultation with their family and doctor—not politicians.”
Tiffany supported legislation cutting Medicaid funding and disqualifying Planned Parenthood funding, and he supported blocking abortion coverage in certain insurance plans. He also voted against legislation designed to protect out-of-state travel for abortions.
Crowley said in the debate, “Women are holding their breath every four years just to make sure that they can get access to the care to protect themselves” due to changing political fights over reproductive rights.
Tiffany responded with, “All you women out there, you will not have to hold your breath when I’m governor.” This is the U.S. congressman who tried to overturn the 2020 election at Trump’s request. Tiffany is absolutely untrustworthy.
David Crowley supported the 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that struck down the state’s 1849 abortion ban and has consistently pushed to enshrine reproductive freedom into the state constitution.
I will rest easier when Wisconsin follows so many other states and makes access to abortion a health care right embedded in our Constitution. A Democratic Legislature and governor could make this happen. I encourage you to vote for David Crowley and all Democrats.
