School buses allowed through road construction area

The reconstruction of South Main Street in Cedar Grove shouldn’t affect school bus routes or schedules as children returned to classes this week.

“They (construction workers) were told by the village that the school buses need to get through,” Johnson Bus Cedar Grove Terminal Manager Stacy Yankunas said.

“I do not anticipate any buses running behind other than maybe the one going on South Main, but I have built in time for that. I believe we’ll be fine. I have also planned for all but one route to stay clear of South Main Street through November. So times have been adjusted to accommodate these changes from day one.”

The rest of the vehicles traveling to school may want to consider a different route.

“They are trying to keep other traffic off the street,  so I would say they’ll have to use side streets. I have spoken with the project supervisor, and he has let the crews know,” Yankunas said. 

Work on South Main Street between Union and Maple avenues includes reconstruction of water distribution, sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems, along with the road, sidewalk and railroad crossing.

The underground portion of the work is slated to be completed in November. The roadway and sidewalk reconstruction is expected to be completed next summer.

South Main Street remains open to local traffic but not through traffic. Detour signs are posted.

The project cost is about $10 million. The village is paying $7.5 million through low-interest loans from the United States Department of Agriculture with the rest coming from its budget.

PTS Contractors of Green Bay is doing the utility work. A contractor for the road and sidewalk reconstruction hasn’t been selected.
