It’s air-raid Kade for the Pirates:

This time it was Kade Kintop’s turn.

After quarterback Jack Bunyan and receiver Aedyn Brownmiller set school records for single-game passing and receiving yards in an opening-week win, Kintop broke the mark for catches last Friday.

Port’s high-octane offense put up another 460 yards in a 36-14 home win over Mount Horeb/Barneveld in a match-up of two teams ranked in the top 10 in Division 3.

Kintop keyed a fast Pirates’ start, and it wasn’t even one of his 12 catches that did it. On the first play from scrimmage, Bunyan threw to Kintop behind the line of scrimmage, and Kintop, a former quarterback, launched a bomb to Kiya Sullivan for a 65-yard touchdown. The anchor behind the end zone was closer to Sullivan than to any defender.

“We knew we were going to do a double pass right off the bat. It worked out really well,” Port coach John Bunyan said.

Kintop’s 12 grabs went for 204 yards and two scores. He broke Robert Seer’s record of nine catches against Whitefish Bay in 2007.

Jack Bunyan went 29-for-39 passing for 362 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He leads the state in passing yards by more than 200. Kintop is third in receiving yards with 302 and Brownmiller is fourth with 299.

Port built a 22-0 lead and were up, 22-8, before the Vikings got as close as 22-14, taking advantage of an interception on the 12-yard line.

The Pirates answered with a 72-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 13-yard catch by Sullivan. In the fourth quarter, Port drove 79 yards on 11 plays for a score. Kintop caught a 17-yard pass across the middle as a teammate went deep and cleared the defense, then cut outside and sprinted to the end zone untouched.

Bunyan, a junior, continues to develop in his second year as a starter after being named to the East Central Conference first team last season.

“He’s really seeing the defensive line and linebackers and the blitz. Sometimes he’s backpedaling just to ensure that creates some space,” his father said.

The Vikings tried to take away the bomb, but that didn’t slow the Pirates down.

“They weren’t going to allow us to go deep. OK, we’re going to pick you apart a little bit underneath,” Bunyan said.

Sullivan caught eight balls for 126 yards and two scores. Brownmiller caught two for 35 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mason Schwanz ran 10 times for 31 yards and caught five passes for 36 yards.

“With the explosiveness of these guys, they can make you miss, and Schwanz is a great running back too,” Bunyan said.

The offense that has scored 75 points and gained 1,054 yards in two weeks was built months ago in the offseason, and work continues, especially between the quarterback and receivers.

“He has great chemistry with them,” Bunyan said of his son. “They’re staying longer after practice, talking about coverage.”

Port’s defense slowed running back Eli Maier, who ran for 151 yards in a win against Grafton in the season opener. This time, Maier ran 16 times for 73 yards, and tight end Henry DeRosier had five catches for 27 yards, one week after making six catches for 80 yards and a score.

“We matched their physicality,” Bunyan said. “We were in the backfield a lot and (Maier) made a couple of our guys miss.”

Port opens Glacier Trails Conference play by hosting former North Shore Conference rival Nicolet (1-1) on Friday.
