Quilt talks set at Cedarburg museum

The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts in Cedarburg is hosting two artist talks in August.

Holly Wong, who is featured in the Slow Light exhibit, and museum senior curator Emily Schlemowitz will take part in an artist conversation from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.

During the talk, Wong will share her artistic practices, share insights and preview her 2027 exhibit at the museum.

Wong, who creates fiber and drawing-based installations and collaged paintings that explore healing and resilience, earned a master of fine arts degree at the San Francisco Art Institute and has participated in more than 100 exhibits.

She is a Presidential Scholar in the arts who lives and works in San Francisco.

The fee for the talk is $10 for museum members and $15 for nonmembers.

A Decorate Your Demin workshop will follow the talk, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Aug. 1.

Those attending are invited to bring their own piece of clothing, denim or not, for materials and instruction on embroidery, visible mending and patches.

There will be some supplies available, such as buttons, basic embroidery needles and thread, trim, fabric scraps and fabric markers, but those attending are encouraged to bring materials such as embroidery needles, thread, patches, fabric or hoops.

The Shop Our Stash will also be open to purchase materials.

A $5 donation is suggested for the workshop.

Liz Alpert Fay, who will be featured in the Ordinary/Extraordinary Women exhibit, will present a gallery talk from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.

Fay has created art quilts for 17 years, exhibiting nationally and in Japan. Her quilts can be found in private and corporate collections, as well as in many publications, including The Art Quilt by Robert Shaw.

In 1998, Fay began creating colorful hand-hooked artworks of her own design. Her studio practice has expanded to include large-scale contemporary hooked art pieces and installations that have been have been selected for juried shows and invitational museum exhibitions.

In 2006, she began experimenting with found objects as inspiration. That led her to work three dimensionally, and to a continued exploration of mixed media sculpture.

Fay later founded and acted as co-chairman and artistic director of the Newtown Hooked Art Shows where she promoted innovation in the hooked art of contemporary artists by producing an annual juried show.
