Lentz wins pair of league titles, Huenink wins one

They have led their teams all season long in their respective events, and now they’ve got Big East Conference titles to show for it.

Ozaukee junior Jack Lentz won the shot put at Monday’s conference meet at St. Mary Catholic with a throw of 50 feet, 8 inches. He also won the discus with a toss of 162-4.

The shot put total is just shy of Lentz’s personal record of 51-3.5 he set at the Hilbert Invite May 8. The discus is a personal record by nearly eight feet.

“Jack Lentz had an outstanding meet in the throws,” coach Chris Utecht said of the May 8 meet.

Last year at the conference meet, Lentz was third in the shot put with a throw of 48-11 and third in discus with a toss of 132-9.

Cedar Grove-Belgium senior Weston Huenink, the conference champ in cross country last fall, won the 1,600-meter race in 4 minutes, 29.72 seconds.

Last year, he was second in 4:33.96.

“He led from the beginning of the race and worked hard to extend his lead throughout the whole race,” coach Jamie Brill said.

The Rocket boys scored 56 points and placed fourth of 14 teams. Manitowoc Lutheran won with 156, followed by Oostburg’s 111 and Kohler’s 104.

Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Abram Brill was second in pole vault by clearing 11-0. Andrew Neese was third at 9-0. Both tied their personal bests.

“Abram was one leg graze away from 11-6 which is the school record, so that was exciting that he was able to attempt that in competition,” coach Brill said.

The Rockets’ 1,600 relay of Nolan Brill, Parker Held, Huenink and Noah Peterson was third in 3:39.39.

“We ran in second or third for most of the race, but Noah had to battle with the with fourth-place runner to capture the all conference honor,” coach Brill said.

The 3,200 relay of Nolan Brill, Cameron Holle, Noah Hopeman and Jack Krause was third in 8:57.65.

Abram Brill was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 45.2 seconds. Huenink was fourth in the 800 in 2:06.72.

“Nolan put the team in a really good position after running a strong first leg. Noah held on to stay in all conference contention,” coach Brill said.

“Eli then had a strong kick during his last lap to put the team back into third place, and Jack ran tough to hang on to third. It is always impressive to come in seeded eighth and finish third to earn all conference.”

Ozaukee scored 38 points and was eighth.

The 3,200 relay of Wyatt Borchardt, Fritz Hoffmann, Ayden Hartmann and Nicholas Schubert was second in 8:56.88.

Schubert, a state qualifier in cross country, was fourth in the 3,200 in 10:19.4.

Braydon Lowrance-Eischen was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 42-8.5.

Schmidt, Utecht lead the girls

Ozaukee’s girls scored 29 points and finished ninth. Mishicot ran away with the meet with 140 points. St. Mary Catholic was second at 95.

Helen Utecht was third in the shot put with a throw of 34-3.5 and was third in the discus with a toss of 120-3.

“Helen Utecht continues to improve in both the discus and shot put,” coach Utecht said.

The 3,200 relay of Maggie Hoffmann, Katelyn Gomez, Eva VanMinsel and Madison Glaeser was fourth in 11:31.21. Lilia Steinert was fourth in the high jump by clearing 4-8. Glaeser was fifth in the 3,200 in 12:25.79.

For Cedar Grove-Belgium, Brynlee Schmidt, the school record holder in cross country, was third in the 3,200 in 12:12.5.

“She ran a consistent race and stuck with runners four and five through seven laps. On the eighth lap, she used her strength to create a huge gap and capture third with plenty of room to spare,” coach Brill said.

The Rockets scored 11 points and finished tied for 12th.

Cedar Grove-Belgium hosts a Division 3 regional meet on Tuesday, May 26. The top four finishers advance to sectional competition at Hilbert on Friday, May 29. The top four there advance to the state meet in La Crosse.
