Rockets, Warriors excel in the cold in track

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s boys had nine entries place in the top three in the Rockets’ six-team track and field meet last Thursday.

The 400-meter relay of Noah Peterson, Parker Held, Cameron Holle and RJ Griffin won in 47.16 seconds.

The Rockets got eight third places.

The 1,600 relay of Peterson, Abram Brill, Holle and Held finished in 3:50.84.

Held ran the 100 in 12.11 seconds. Wes Huenink ran the 1,600 in 4:51.04. Nolan Brill ran the 800 in 2:12.69. Holle ran the 200 in 25.1 seconds. Davion Bretz threw the shot 39 feet, 0.25 inches. RJ Griffin cleared 5-4 in the high jump.

“We had a successful first outdoor and home meet. We had multiple top three finishes and many athletes gave strong efforts in the meet. We have a lot of new talent this year that we are excited to see develop throughout the season,” coach Jamie Brill said.

For the Ozaukee boys, Jack Lentz won the discus with a throw of 142-1, and the shot put with a throw of 47-6.

Nick Schubert won the 3,200 in 10:27.96. The 2,100 relay of Fritz Hoffmann, Wyatt Borchardt, Ayden Hartmann and Schubert was second in 9:13.45. Hoffmann was second in the 300 hurdles in 45.82 and the long jump with a distance of 17-8.75. CJ Dvorak was second in the 100 in 12.1. Braydon Lowrence-Eischen was second in the discus with 105-4 and third in the 400 in 1:00.28.

Ozaukee’s girls were led by the 3,200 relay of Maggie Hoffmann, Katelyn Gomez, Eva VanMinsel and Madison Glaeser, which won in 11:47.22. Glaeser was second in the 3,200 in 12:49.41. VanMinsel was third in 13:54.57.

Helen Utecht was second in the discus with a throw of 96-2 and second in shot put with a throw of 30-9. Ayva Johnson was third in the 200 in 30.09 and third in the long jump with a leap of 13-5. Lilia Steinert was third in the high jump by clearing 4-6.

Ozaukee girls and boys adjusted to the weather.

“The cold and windy conditions at Cedar Grove weren’t ideal, especially towards the end of the meet, but our athletes responded the right way,” coach Chris Utecht said. “They stayed positive, relied on their training, competed hard and showed a lot of toughness, which is something we’re really proud of as a coaching staff.”

Brynlee Schmidt, a state qualifier in the 800 last season, won the even in 2:34.94. She also won the 3,200 in 12:41.93.

Coach Brill said she likes to juggle the boys’ and girls’ relay lineups.

“We are always looking forward to putting together different relays. Those are a fun way to really incorporate that team aspect into track and field,’ she said.

“It’s fun to work with Brandon (Langer, distance coach) to figure out which of our runners (distance and sprinters) we will use together, specially in the 3.200 and 1,600 meter relays.”

Ozaukee was to compete at Random Lake on Tuesday and will compete Mishicot on Thursday, April 16.

The Rockets compete at Howards Grove on Thursday, April 16.
