Warriors’ backcourt takes back seat to no one

One local girls’ basketball team boasted an impressive backcourt and another had a senior carry the load in the Big East Conference South this season.

Ozaukee had two guards honored by Big East coaches.

Sophomore Mya Schroeder was named to the second team. She led the Warriors in all major statistical categories, averaging 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Her scoring and assists ranked ninth in the conference, and she was sixth in steals and 11th in rebounding.

“Mya is a talented player. She was a spark on the offensive side of the game,” coach Linda Weyker said.

“Mya contributed to each game whether it was through scoring, rebounding or getting a quick steal for a layup. She has a great couple of years coming up in basketball as she will be a junior next year.”

When it wasn’t Schroeder excelling, it was senior guard Savannah Quade. She averaged 12.4 points, four rebounds, two assists and 2.1 steals per game and received honorable mention for the second straight year.

“Savannah is a hard-working player who gives her all every game and every practice. She is a strong leader both on the court and off the court, which is why she was one of our captains this year,” Weyker said.

“Savannah put time in during the offseason to improve her skills for the season, and that definitely showed on the court. She had games where she came up with some important shots for us. She will be missed on the court next season.”

Ozaukee finished 5-7 in the Big East South, tied for fourth, and went 13-12 overall.

Cedar Grove-Belgium went through a rebuilding season after losing a slew of talented seniors.

Forward Gracie Schmidt was the bright spot. The senior led the team in all major statistical categories. She averaged 14.7 points per game, 10th in the conference, was third in steals with 4.6 per game and averaged 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She logged a triple-double on Jan. 26 at Roncalli, scoring 22 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and making 12 steals.

“She was truly the backbone of our team this season. Over the past four years, she has grown into an exceptional player and an even better person,” coach Vanessa Depies said.

“Her leadership, work ethic and competitive spirit set the tone for our program every day. We’re incredibly proud of the player she’s become and the example she’s set for those who will follow.”

The Rockets finished 3-9 in the Big East South and 6-18 overall.

Oostburg repeated as conference (12-0) and state champion, going 30-0 behind Cedar Grove-Belgium High School principal Josh Ketterhagen’s nieces,  Ady, Riley and Kinsley Ketterhagen, and brother Isaiah, the Lady Dutch’s coach.

Kohler was second in the Big East South at 10-2. The Blue Bombers advanced to the Division 4 sectional semifinal, where they lost to Lomira, 56-40.
