Write-in will win spot on Belgium Village Board

For the third year in a row, whoever receives the most write-in votes will be offered a trustee spot on the Belgium Village Board after the April 7 election.

Incumbent Sarah Heisler, who has been on the board since being elected in 2020, turned in noncandidacy papers.  No one else filed papers to run.

The seats of incumbents Chris Plier and Kevin Schueller are up, and both are running.

The person who receives the most write-in votes gets offered the open position, according to state law. Terms are for two years.

It’s a situation with which the village has become familiar.

In 2023, two of the three incumbents ran, but Don Gotcher turned in noncandidacy papers and nobody else filed to run.

Schueller received 22 of the 34 write-in votes and joined the board.

In 2024, Village President Pete Anzia filed noncandidacy papers and Trustee Roseann Geib ran for the spot uncontested.

Incumbents Rose Sauers and Dan Wolfe won re-election, but nobody filed papers to fill Geib’s seat.

Andrew Bartley received the most write-in votes with 12, and he joined the board.

In the Cedar Grove-Belgium School Board election, board Vice President Nancy Niebauer turned in noncandidacy papers, and two people are running to fill that Ozaukee County seat.

Michael Sells and Dan Derler filed papers to run.

Incumbent Eric Meinnert is running unopposed for the Sheboygan County seat.

Terms are for three years.

Niebauer, who is a registered nurse, said increasing demands at work drove her decision not to seek re-election.

“I have been on the School Board for quite a few years now. My position at work has had higher demands and now includes a little more travel. There are quite a few family events coming up as well. With all that, I do not want to have my plate so full that I can not dedicate enough time to do everything as well as I would like,” Niebauer said.

“I have loved being on the board and hopefully, I have represented the community well over the years. We have developed better curriculum and improved the school report cards, improved the culture of the school and trust in the board. Rocket Academy has been amazing to be part of. Now it is time to enjoy what has been built over the years in a great school and community. The current board members and (Supt.) Liz (Freeman) are fantastic.”
