Winter solstice event set at Riveredge

A free winter solstice celebration will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville.

The day will include hour-long guided hikes at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m. and a guided sunset hike at 4 p.m.

There will be crafting in the coop from noon to 8 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a recycled, clean glass jar to make a luminary. Participants will also make bird feeders and coloring mindfulness mandalas.

There will be a bonfire from 4:30 to 8 p.m. S’mores and healthy snacks will be provided.

Stargazing and astronomy lessons will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., conditions permitting.

Those attending are asked not to use a flashlight or headlamp but instead let their eyes adjust to the darkness.

Luminaries will be lit for people to hike the 1-1/2-mile self-guided Trails Aglow route beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Family Nature Club will gather at 5 p.m. for a group hike along the route.

Riveredge still has openings in its winter camp for youths ages 6 to 12.

There are two sessions of the camp  — from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. December 22 and 23,  and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. December 29 and 30.

An optional overnight session from Dec. 30 to 31 is available as well.

Campers will do activities that include snowshoeing, ice fishing, building campfires, hiking, playing games and making crafts.

The fee for members is $145 per camper and for nonmembers is $160.
