Winter reading challenge ongoing at Port library

The Niederkorn Library in Port Washington will hold a winter reading challenge through the end of February.

The bingo-style challenge requires readers to pick up a bingo sheet at the library’s circulation desk and work to complete a bingo — five in a row in any direction.

Anyone who completes a bingo and returns the sheet to the library will receive a prize, while those who complete a blackout will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.

Youth activities

Youth activities at the library include storytimes at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Feb. 25. The theme changes each week, and each session includes not only stories but a craft.

Storytimes are most suitable for preschoolers but are open to all.

The Pokémon Trading Card Club will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. 

Youngsters can enjoy a morning of card trading in the children’s library and receive a new-to-you Pokemon card. 

A STEM Studio will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12. The drop-in program is for children ages 8 to 12 who like to create art and build projects. Each gathering will focus on a specific craft project, art project or STEM-themed building activity using supplies provided by the library. 

The Lego Building Club will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23. Youngsters can use the library Legos to design and build a creation that can then be displayed at the library. The group is intended for children 5 and older. 

A sensory playtime will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 27. A variety of tactile, sensory activity stations will be set up for children younger than 13 to explore with their caregiver.  Those attending should dress to make a mess. 

“Be My Valentine” is the theme for a 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, event where participants will craft homemade Valentines and decorate Valentine’s Day cookies. The session is best for children 13 and younger. 

Teen and adult activities 

Cold weather craft kits will be available from Feb. 1 until supplies run out. The kits will contain all the materials needed to make a self-directed craft. 

A grief support group will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb, 4 and 19.  The group is facilitated by Compassus Hospice. 

The D&D PW Bookwyrms group meets from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. D&D and RPG players of all experience levels are welcome.

“Medicare 101” will be the topic of a 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, session that will explain how to enroll in Medicare, discuss what Medicare parts A through D, are and the cost-sharing benefits associated with each. 

Assistance for people seeking jobs will be provided from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 11 and 25. Those seeking help can register for a time slot during which they can learn about free employment tools and resources with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Job Center of Wisconsin. 

A short story hour will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Port Washington Senior Center on Foster Street.
The Friday Morning Book Talk group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Port Senior Center.

The Novel Ideas Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16.

The Bring Your Own Book Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Inventors BrewPub. Those attending are asked to share the book they are reading or just finished, no matter the genre.

Work in Progress Wednesday for crafters will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. The group is sponsored by PW Pride.

A program on maple sugaring will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11. Those attending will learn about tree physiology, ecosystem dynamics and the cultural significance of maple sugaring traditions. 

The Luxembourg American Cultural Society will discuss “Preserving the Past” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12.

The program will explore the traditions and treasures of Luxembourg Americans by taking a look at artifacts from the LAC Center collection to discover how they connect generations through art, heritage and storytelling.

“Chocoholics Unite,” a program about the history of chocolate, how it’s made and different chocolates from around the world, will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18. After the program, those attending will taste different chocolates and vote to determine which is best. The program is for people ages 14 and older.
