Waste Management has improved its service over the past several weeks, buying the company more time before the village and town of Belgium consider terminating their contracts and seeking another provider.

The Village Public Works Committee last Thursday determined it would continue to monitor the service Waste Management is providing, Clerk Julie Lesar said.

Issues that included not picking up dumpsters at the recycling center have improved, and complaints about curbside pickup were mostly because the schedule changed, she said.

“Carts aren’t being picked up at the same time as they used to be,” Lesar said.

The schedule shifted during summer when the company had staffing issues. Residents called the village when their carts weren’t picked up at the regular time, thinking they were forgotten or missed.

Supr. Tom Bichler at Monday’s Town Board meeting said pickup has gotten better during the last two months after the board had considered switching to a different provider if Waste Management didn’t improve.

“Good news. They hired some employees,” he said. “Things are hopefully going in the right direction.”
