Warriors get state experience

Ozaukee High School’s two Division 3 state track and field qualifiers didn’t earn medals but picked up valuable experience and represented their school well at La Crosse last weekend.

Junior Jack Lentz finished 12th in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 8.25 inches.

Lentz already broke the school record in the shot put this season, and he broke the school and Big East Conference record in the discus.

“Jack had a very good season this year. On the way to state he broke the shot put record, one of the longest-standing records for our program. While he didn’t make it on the podium at state this year, he was only 8.5 inches from doing so,” throws coach Brandon Clapper said.

“With his drive and commitment, I have no doubt that his senior year will end with him extending both his school records, and finishes in both shot and disc on the podium at state.”

Junior Nicholas Schubert was 14th in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 4.57 seconds. He also broke the school record this season.

“Nick did a great job at his first state track meet. It’s hard to simulate the state meet and atmosphere anywhere else. For him to run near his personal record and with all the weather delays, I thought he handled it really well,” Ozaukee distance coach Andrew Pfeuffer said. “He will take this as a great learning experience and hopefully come back even stronger next year as a senior.”

Head coach Chris Utecht is proud of both of his qualifiers.

“Nick was consistent, hardworking, and coachable throughout the season,” he said.

“I see Jack’s accomplishments as a testament to the dedication and effort he puts in throughout the year.”
