Volunteers, supplies needed for disabled vets’ fishing outing

Boats and volunteers are being sought to help with the 53rd annual Disabled Vets Fish Outing, which will be held on Wednesday, June 24.

Donations of fish and homemade cookies and bars are also needed for the event.

Area fishermen take roughly 100 disabled veterans from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Milwaukee out for a morning fishing outing, followed by a cookout and fish boil.

The fish caught by the vets are weighed and cleaned while they enjoy a cookout and fish boil at the American Legion Hall.

Donations of fish for the fish boil may be dropped off at the Port Washington Marina office before Tuesday, June 23.

Volunteers are also needed to help get the veterans on and off the boats, clean their fish, set up and clean up for the dinner and prepare food. To volunteer, call Bonnie Probelski at (262) 389-0398.

Any boat owner who would like to participate in the event or any volunteer is asked to call Judy Klumb at (262) 339-6006.

The fishing time is estimated to be from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Boat owners are asked to check in at a table outside the marina office by 7 a.m. on June 24.

Anyone volunteering to help with food preparation is asked to be at the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Hall on Lake Street at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 23.

Homemade cookies and bars, including sugar-free goodies, should be placed in disposable containers, labeled as to whether they are sugar-free or not and dropped off at the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Hall on Lake Street in Port Washington between 2 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23.
