Volunteers sought to create rain garden

Volunteers are being sought to help plant a rain garden at Coal Dock Park in Port Washington.

The rain garden is being created by the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory, which notes that native plantings like those used in the garden are hosts for insect species that feed birds and support pollination and pest control.

The plants’ deep roots also help prevent erosion and trap runoff that can otherwise pollute the lake.

Volunteers are asked to sign up for two-hour shifts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

They are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and gardening gloves and to bring a reusable water bottle and their favorite digging tool.
