Vietnam War tunnel fight discussed Jan. 15

Thomas Deits, an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, will be the speaker for the Monday, Jan. 15, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians, continuing a talk he began with the group in September.

Deits, who received a Purple Heart, will talk about the fight against the Viet Cong and the 200 miles of tunnels where they hid and stored supplies and traveled as they attacked and then retreated. The tunnels were often well hidden and guarded with booby traps, snakes, spiders and cornered fighters.

Though not an official tunnel rat, Diets fought in the tunnels several times during the war.

Deits is a Madison resident and a Cedarburg High School graduate.

Admission is $25, which includes a buffet dinner from Out and Out Catering and the presentation.  A limited number of $10 tickets just for the 7 p.m. program are available.

The meeting will be held at the Rose-Harms American Legion Hall at 1540 13th Ave. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m.
