Trio of local gymnasts are off to Wisconsin Rapids

One Pirate and two Bullhawks are headed to the big dance in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, March 7.

Port Washington freshman Chloe Barber qualified for the Division 2 state meet in the all-around and on vault and beam at the Waterford Sectional on Saturday.

Barber was second on vault with 8.95 and second on beam with 9.2. She was third in the all-around with 35.325 points.

“Chloe Barber turned in a strong performance,” coach Gale Sigler said.

The Pirates scored 134 points and finished fourth of seven teams, and that was no small feat. Senior Grace Baumann was sick and missed the meet. The bus didn’t show up so the team couldn’t travel together, and someone pulled the fire alarm at Waterford, delaying the start of the meet.

“It was a day to say the least,” Sigler said.

Other scores on vault were: Maddie Mellesmoen, 8.2; Sabrina Eixenberger, 8.0; and Milena Valasek, 7.95.

Scores on bars were: Mellesmoen, 8.6; Barber, 8.5; Vivi Styles, 8.375; and Valasek, 8.1.

Other beam scores were: Styles, 8.925; Eixenberger, 8.5 and Addie Wellenstein, 7.45.

Floor exercise scores were: Barber, 8.675; Styles, 8.4; Mellesmoen, 8.15; and Wellenstein, 8.025.

“I’m so proud of the team effort and accomplishments they’ve had this season. It’s certainly has been a privilege to be their coach,” Sigler said.

For Grafton/Cedarburg, junior Peyton McPherson qualified in the all-around, on beam and bars, and freshman Ava Viera on beam at the Division 1 Manitowoc Lincoln Sectional.

McPherson was fifth in the all-around with 35.8 points. She won beam with 9.325 and was second on bars with 9.225. Ava Viera was fifth on beam with 9.15.

“Peyton has been a true asset to this team. From giving pep talks, wiping away tears, and being her teammates’ biggest cheerleader, she has been someone we can always depend on. She is truly one of the hardest-working athletes I have ever had the privilege to work with,” coach Anna Tominsek said.

Girls’ basketball teams end seasons

Ozaukee’s girls lost at Living Word Lutheran, 70-50, last Friday. Cedar Grove-Belgium lost, 47-29, at Winnebago Lutheran on Feb. 24.
