Town selects roads to repair this year

The Belgium Town Board at its annual meeting last month announced the results of its annual road inspection.

All three supervisors drove through the town and picked out which roads to be improved this year.

All gravel roads will get an update, Supr. Bill Janeshek said.

“The gravel roads are in tough shape,” he said.

Other plans include: scratch and seal work near the 1600 block of Silver Beach Road, topcoat on Clay Ridge Road, a culvert patch on Hickory Grove Road, chip seal work on short stretches of new blacktop on Lovers Lane and Indian Trail and shouldering and spot ditching “here and there,” Janeshek said.

Chip seal work will be done on Dixie Road, if the Town of Port Washington also agrees to it. Dixie Road goes through both towns.

“That’s going to use up most of the budget,” Janeshek said.

The budget is $324,700.

Town Chairman Tom Winker, who often mentions the quality of the town’s roads, again expressed his pride.

“I will tell you Bill made a comment when we were riding around on Saturday (during) road inspection. A lot of other townships wonder how they’re going to find money to fill the potholes. If you say, in the Town of Belgium we’ve got to go fill potholes I think you’ve got to go find some first,” he said. “It’s a compliment to the leadership of this board.”

Paving the town transfer site is on hold until the town pays off its loan for the Town Hall.

“The budget is a little thin right now, so it’s on the back burner,” Supr. Tom Bichler said.

“I really give him credit for having a vision,” Winker said. “We’ve had several people ask about paving that. There’s only so much money to go around. Once we get this (Town Hall) paid off it will free up some monies, depending on what we get from the state.”
