Sculpture artist is featured at center

Geornica Daniels, an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture and site-specific installations, is the August artist in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Daniels will demonstrate her work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 7 and 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays, Aug. 8, 22 and 29, and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Aug. 2, 16, 23 and 31.

Daniels’ recent work explores the embedded histories of found objects and the portrayal of memory in three dimensions, what memory looks like and how we reshape those thoughts in attempts to suppress or control our memories.

The Cedarburg artist, an advanced opportunity program fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, plans to expand her studio practice while continuing her studies.

She received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2023 and is pursuing her master of fine arts degree in sculpture at UWM.

She has exhibited regionally in Milwaukee at Brook Stevens Gallery, Between Two Galleries, Grey Area, Kenilworth Square East Gallery, Var Gallery and in Sheboygan at The John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

“I am driven by a desire to encapsulate and preserve fleeting moments, even as I recognize that memory is fluid, fragmented and ever shifting. This paradox shapes my use of materials — paper, beeswax, floral foam, rope and found objects — which serve as metaphors for the impermanence and evolution of memory,” Daniels said.

Daniels will teach “Sculpting Memory with Paper-Mache” from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 9. Students will use simple materials to create sculptural paper vessels that explore memory, meaning and personal symbolism.

Participants may bring a bowl to use as a mold for shaping their vessel or borrow one from the instructor.

No experience is necessary for the workshop, which is intended for people 14 and older.

All supplies are included in the class fee of $50 for center members and $60 for nonmembers.
