School year is ending early

Those who were hoping for a snow day with this week’s storm are getting their wish come June in the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District.

The School Board last week agreed to move the last day of school up to Friday, June 2, per Supt. Chad Brakke’s request.

The school year had been slated to end with a half day on Wednesday, June 7. The change means students will be getting out 2.5 days earlier.

That, Brakke said, allows C.D. Smith to get an earlier start on asbestos removal and construction work included in the $21 million referendum approved by voters in April.

Board member Kurt Kraus reminded the seniors who attended the meeting to complete a civics class assignment that the move won’t affect them.

“The seniors aren’t getting gypped. It’s just the younger kids are getting out earlier,” he said. “We’re not making you come longer.”

Brakke said the district could survive two snow days and still meet the state-required minutes of instruction. A third snow day would require a schedule adjustment.
