She scored the most points and dished out the most assists in school history — and she led the Big East Conference in both categories this basketball season.

That added up to Ozaukee senior point guard Becca Schauer being named Big East Conference Player of the Year, one season after earning  the second most votes among coaches. She also was an all-state honorable mention.

Coach Tim Wolff said one of the biggest elements he uses to assess a player is how the rest of the team plays.

“What makes a really, really good player is when they make everybody around them better,” he said.

Schauer, he said, was the best player he has coached in his five years at the Warriors’ helm.

Schauer led the 14-team league in scoring at 19.9 points per game. She scored 1,497 points in her career, breaking the mark of 1,483 by 2004 graduate Courtnie Paulus.

In the Big East, Mishicot’s Kylie Schmidt was second with 18.8 points per game.

Schauer broke the single-game scoring record of 35 points that she held with three other players, pouring in 38 at Reedsville on Feb. 15.

“I could always count on her to get off a good shot,” Wolff said.

Schauer was more dominant in assists. She averaged 6.1 per game. Ashley Gruman of Random Lake was a distant second with 3.8 per game.

Schauer finished with 453 assists in her career, breaking the school mark of 418 by 2010 graduate Kaitlyn Thill.

She also blew away the competition in steals with 6.2 per game. Mackenzie Holzwart of Howards Grove was second with 4.2.

Beyond that, Schauer brought intangibles.

At the all-conference meeting, Wolff said, “What I saw in practice was somebody who was always trying to be a positive influence. I just felt she made my job as a coach much easier.”

Two of Schauer’s teammates also earned recognition. Sophomore Gabby Klas made the second team and her sister, Greta, a senior, earned honorable mention.

Gabby was fifth in scoring in the Big East’s South Division with 11.8 points per game. Her 59 three-pointers topped the division and was one away from the 14-team league lead.

“I think she’s proven that she is a legitimate outside shooter,” Wolff said.

“In her two years that are left here she is going to be counted on more so to be a leading scorer and facilitator like Becca was.”

Greta, a four-year varsity player, was 10th in scoring in the Big East South Division with nine points per game and was fifth in the 14-team league in three-pointers with 49.

“I’m very happy for Greta. I’m very proud of her. I know she has worked extremely hard,” Wolff said.

Cedar Grove-Belgium had two players earn honorable mention in different ways.

Senior Shelby Cooney was a team captain. Coach Jason Jones said she “played awesome defense all year long, worked super hard and did all the things that a coach would want a player to do as far as effort and attitude.”

She was fourth in the South Division in steals with 3.4 per game and sixth in assists with 2.6 per game.

Junior Alyssa Mentink was eighth in the division in scoring with 9.5 points per game.

“Alyssa stepped up as a leader as far as scoring goes. She played well all season and really got better as the season went on and got smarter as she played,” Jones said.

Both coaches were pleased that multiple players on their teams earned recognition. The league has 14 teams, meaning 70 starting players, with only 27 all-conference spots.

Wolff said the Big East ranks in the top three in Division 3 or 4 in the state and compared the all-conference voting to the 11-team football league that honors more players.

Jones said “to get two girls on that team is special.”
