Saints dig too big of a hole at home

The Saukvile Saints fell behind early in their regular season finale at Fred Junie Dickmann Field and didn’t recover against the Brownsville 49ers.

The 49ers scored seven runs in the first three innings on the way to a 9-3 victory.

The 49ers took advantage of two errors and a wild pitch as they scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and two more in the third.

Connor Steers had an RBI double in the first inning. Easten Zanel brought in two runs with a double in the second.

The Saints got all their runs in the sixth inning.

After the leadoff hitter reached on an error, Simon Bares singled, and an infield error loaded the bases.

Brian Hirschinger smacked a double to score two runs. With one out and Hirschinger at third, Zander Goines popped a double to plate a third run.

The 49ers hit five straight singles in the eighth inning to score two runs.

Cole Bzdawka went the distance for the Saints, allowing nine runs (four earned), 14 hits and two walks, striking out 11.

Bares and Hirschinger each had two hits.

For the 49ers, Weston Poth allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six in five innings. Jonah Brey allowed three hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out five in four innings.

Brownsville went to 8-7. Kewaskum has sealed the title of the Rock River League’s  Northern Division with a 14-1 mark. Hartford is 11-4.

The Saints, 2-13 and losers of seven in a row, were to end the season at the Slinger Stingers (6-9) on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
