Road reconstruction work continues in Cedar Grove

Many students and staff members of the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District will see a brighter orange than the school colors on their way to classes this fall.

South Main Street in Cedar Grove between Union and Maple avenues is being reconstructed. The water distribution, sanitary sewer and storm sewer collection systems are being redone, along with the road, sidewalk and railroad crossing.

The sanitary sewer was built in the 1930s and has reached the end of its life, Cedar Grove Clerk/Treasurer Julie Brey said.

“The proposed sanitary system improvements will reduce the inflow of clear water to the wastewater treatment plant, which will reduce annual operating costs,” she said, adding that the improvements will add flow capacity to the sanitary sewer system.

The water distribution system was also built nearly a century ago. The updated version will reduce water main breaks, replace lead service lines and add flow capacity, Brey said.

The road and sidewalk were built in the 1960s and are in need of replacement, she said. The railroad tracks were raised 20 years ago, and the project will improve the drivability of the crossing.

The underground portion of the work is slated to be done in November. The roadway and sidewalk reconstruction is expected to be completed next summer.

South Main Street remains open to local traffic but not through traffic. Detour signs are posted.

The project cost is about $10 million. The village is paying $7.5 million through low-interest loans from the United States Department of Agriculture with the rest coming from its budget.

PTS Contractors of Green Bay is doing the utility work. A contractor for the roadway and sidewalk reconstruction hasn’t been selected yet, Brey said.
