RLO soccer starting to put things together

The Random Lake/Ozaukee high school co-op girls’ soccer team bolted out of the gates at Kewaskum last Thursday and never looked back.

Hannah Learned scored on an assist from Mya Schroeder nearly seven minutes into the game, and Faith Wilson scored on an assist from her sister Lexi 60 seconds later in what turned into a 4-0 victory.

“Hannah’s goal came from a nice little touch pass from Mya off to the right of the 18. Hannah came in on the run and ripped a nice shot over the head of the keeper,” coach Matt Wilson said.

“One minute later, Lexi was battling for a loose ball off to the left of the goal. She poked the ball loose and dropped it back to the middle, where Faith set up for a nice one touch shot from the 25 to the lower right corner of the goal.”

Schroeder scored on an assist from Savannah Quade nearly 20 minutes in to make it 3-0 at halftime.

“Mya’s goal came from a nice pass from Savannah down the right sideline. Mya cut in on two defenders and hammered a beautiful shot with her left to the opposite corner of the goal,” Wilson said.

Emily Luza scored in the second half on a corner kick from Marissa Ter Maat that landed three yards from the post.

“Emily Luza was thtere, fought for position and redirected it with a quick touch to the back of the net,” Wilson said.

RLO’s play showed improvement early in the season.

“We talked about playing simple before the game, a good touch, a simple pass and playing with their heads up and on a swivel. Keep possession and find those quality opportunities through runs and movement,” Wilson said. “They definitely improved on all those things tonight and it showed with having most of the game played on Kewaskum’s half of the field.”

Quade returned from injury, which strengthened RLO’s defense.

“The back line played well and just keeps on getting better, they were able to dissolve a lot of Kewaskum’s pressure before they reached their attacking third,” Wilson said.

RLO, 2-2, was to open Big East Conference play at Oostburg on Tuesday. They host Mayville on Thursday, April 23, and Kohler on Tuesday, April 28.

Injuries keep hampering CG-Belgium

Cedar Grove-Belgium not only lost last Thursday’s game at Sheboygan North. The Rockets likely lost a budding star for the season.

Freshman Polly Lemberg, “who was coming along very nicely and was going to be a huge attacking threat for us this year,” coach Zac Garza said, broke her collarbone after falling while battling for a ball.

It’s the third time she broke a collarbone in her athletic career, he said.

In addition, senior midfielders Kami Horn and Gracie Schmidt, along with senior defender Mia Grisolono, were less than 100%.

Sheboygan North won, 3-0.

“They moved the ball well, were stout defensively and have an unbelievable goal keeper,” Garza said.

Schmidt had some near misses and Arden Getschman fired a free kick that the keeper made an “unbelievable diving save” on, Garza said.

On offense, the Golden Raiders put balls where keeper Tessa Krause couldn’t reach.

“They scored some goals you’re just not going to save,” Garza said.

Horn scored on an assist from Schmidt in the second half. Krause made five saves.

Weather made conditions difficult for both teams.

“The fog was crazy. We could not see what was happening at the other end. We could not see the stands at all,” Garza said.

The Rockets, 2-2-1, were to host St. Mary Catholic on Tuesday in the Big East opener. They play at Manitowoc Lutheran on Thursday, April 23, host Kewaskum on Friday, April 24, and Kewaunee on Tuesday, April 28.
