Riveredge programs include storytime

Activities abound at Riveredge Nature Center in the coming weeks, including a storytime and a program on butterflies.

The annual Riveredge BioBlitz! will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11.

The free event will have participants contribute to the monitoring and inventory of plants, birds, insects and fish alongside field experts.

This year, they will collect observations on the main campus, with a special focus on the state natural area surrounding Riveredge creek.

People may participate for all or part of the day. They should wear walking shoes, pack a bag lunch if staying for the day and download the iNaturalist App on their phones.

Advance registration is required.

A summer storytime will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, for children ages 2 to 6, their parents and younger siblings.

The event starts in the children’s library, then moves outdoors. Youngsters will hear a nature-based story, then  enjoy games and outdoor exploration as a group. 

The cost is $3 for children of Riveredge members and $7 for children of nonmembers.

Advance registration is required.

A hike focused on butterflies will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9. The hike will be led by a naturalist.

Some of the most frequently seen butterflies in Wisconsin include the monarch, clouded sulphur, mourning cloak, red-spotted purple and several swallowtail species. The free program is for people 18 and older.
