Resident asks village to allow chickens in backyards

Megan Phillips of Belgium asked the Village Board last month to change its ordinance to allow “a limited number of chickens” in residents’ backyards.

On a change.org petition, Phillips said her family grows as much non-genetically modified organism foods as possible and that chickens provide organic eggs, pest control and waste that can be used for compost.

“Given the health benefits and sustainable attributes aligned with the village’s commitment to quality of life,” the petition asks that the village amend its rules to allow chickens for personal use “while ensuring guidelines to control potential nuisances.”

The Village Board couldn’t discuss or act on the issue since it was brought up during public comments. It referred the matter to the Public Safety Committee.
