Public to vote on pandemic inspired names for peregrine chicks

We Energies is asking the public to weigh in on the names of the peregrine chicks hatched at its power plants this year by selecting from a list of names intended to honor the people who have made a difference throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Online voting runs through Tuesday, May 11.

The top names will be given to the falcon chicks born at We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service power plants across the state. So far, of the 14 eggs laid in these nests, two chicks have hatched in Oak Creek and one at Valley Power Plant in Milwaukee.

Port Washington’s nesting pair are incubating four eggs this spring.

Voters can select five names from the list, which includes:
• Beaker, in honor of the scientists whose research and breakthroughs have helped keep people informed and safe.
• Cargo, to honor the U.S. Postal Service and delivery drivers who have ensured people receive important letters and packages.
• Checkers, in honor of the grocery store checkers, baggers and stockers.  
• Cheers, to denote the toasts that will be made when people can dine in restaurants and bars and to honor the chefs, waiters and bartenders who will make it possible.
• Energizer, to honor the utility workers who have kept the lights on and energy flowing to our homes, hospitals and schools.
• Fauci, named for Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, to commemorate the doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who have been working tirelessly to take care of us when we needed it the most.
• Harvest, for the farmers who are getting fresh produce, meat and dairy products to our tables.
• Hugs for the parents, guardians and caregivers who are balancing more tasks than ever before and still manage to give the best hugs.
• Keanu, named for Keanu Reeves’ character in the movie “Speed,” to honor the bus drivers who have worked throughout the pandemic.
• Kizzmekia, named after Kizzmekia Corbett, an American viral immunologist at the Vaccine Research Center, to honor those helping to provide vaccines.
• Murrow, named for famed journalist Edward R. Murrow, for the reporters, editors and photojournalists making sure the public is well-informed.
• Siren for the police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians who have kept people safe while responding to emergencies.
• Sparkle for the cleaning crews who sanitize homes and workspaces.
• Sprocket, for the manufacturers who have made sure people have the essentials.
• Teach, to honor teachers who have had the difficult task of educating children in the classroom and online.
• Courage, for those who don’t fit into these categories but made a sacrifice to help others in need.
