Port sticks landing on first conference title

They reached a team goal and made school history last Saturday in Waupun.

Port Washington High School’s gymnasts scored 134.625 points and won the Greater Metro Conference, the first league title in program history.

“It was such an incredible feeling when they announced the second place team and we knew Port took first,” coach Gale Sigler said. “To say that I am proud of this team is such an understatement. They have been working very hard to improve throughout the season and have had individual peaks all season long, but to put together this collaborative effort when it mattered most, it was fantastic to say the least.”

Freshman Chloe Barber and senior Maddie Mellesmoen led the Pirates.

Barber finished third on beam, vault and in the all-around, and fourth on bars. Mellesmoen was fifth on bars.

“While Chloe Barber and Maddie Mellesmoen were the two place finishers, this win came down to the depth of talent this team possesses,” Sigler said.

“The meet was so competitive and I was so impressed to see such a mix of schools being represented on the podium for each event. I had no idea where the team scores were going to end up.”

On bars, Barber scored 8.65, Mellesmoen had 8.575, Vivi Styles had 7.925 and Milena Valasak had 7.6.

On beam, Barber had 8.95, Mellesmoen had 8.425, Sabrina Eixenberger had 8.3 and Styles had 8.25.

“Flair and style came through on floor where Vivi Styles captured top honors with a score of 8.85,” Sigler said.

Barber had 8.7, Mellesmoen had 8.15 and Grace Baumann had 8.125.

On vault, Barber had 9.05, Mellesmoen had 8.4, Eixenberger had 8.375 and Styles had 8.3.

“They were ready to go for this meet and will have a quick turnaround to prepare for their tough sectional meet at Waterford,” Sigler said.

“This certainly will serve as great motivation to stay focused and excited for the next step.”

The Division 2 Waterford Sectional is Thursday, Feb. 26.

McPherson leads the Bullhawks

Peyton McPherson finished second in the all-around, on vault and on floor exercise to led Grafton/Cedarburg’s co-op team in the North Shore Conference Meet in Whitefish Bay last Friday.

She scored 36.775 points in the all-around, 9.1 on vault and 9.425 on floor.

She was third on bars with 9.15 and fourth on beam with 9.1.

Ava Viera was fourth on bars with 8.9.

The Bullhawks scored 135.2 points and finished third in the five-team meet. Hartford won with 141.475 points, followed by Homestead’s 139.5.

On vault, Maya Stalter had 8.2, Ella Baken had 8.05 and Silvia Muyres had 7.85.

On bars, Audrey Dursch had 8.15 and Mallory Xiong had 7.95.

On beam, Viera had 8.425, Stalter had 7.7 and Grace Talb had 7.675.

On floor, Talb had 8.375, Stalter had 8.3 and Baken had 8.1.

The Bullhawks compete in the Division 1 Manitowoc Lincoln sectional on Saturday, Feb. 28.

In all sectionals, the top two teams advance to state in Wisconsin Rapids, along with the top five-placing gymnasts on each apparatus and in the all-around.
