Port rules the pool over rival Grafton
Port Washington High School’s depth and quality overwhelmed rival Grafton’s rebuilding program in the pool on Sept. 29.
The Pirates’ swim and dive team finished 1-2 in 11 of 12 events to beat the Black Hawks, 146-26.
Seven different Pirates won events, and Sophia Schicker and Harper Walber-Yoshioka each won two at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School pool in Port.
Schicker took the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 13.28 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.47.
Walber-Yoshioka won the 200 individual medley in 2:36.8 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.23.
“We are coming off a busy stretch with a lot of meets, and the girls did a great job swimming close to their best times. There weren’t necessarily any ‘wow’ swims, but that is expected after coming off a big invite with best times in all three of our varsity A relays,” Port coach Dani Peiffer said.
“If they can swim fast at a low stake dual meet, they are doing well. Grafton is rebuilding, and it was great to see some of their newest swimmers take on this challenging sport. Both teams cheered each other on.”
Port went 1-2-3 in five events. In the 200 individual medley, Gwen Jerome was second in 2:41.61 and Anna Nisiewicz was third in 2:43.53.
Multiple school record-holder Amanda Lotz won the 50 freestyle in 26.83 seconds. Lily Kerbel was second in 27.97 and Sophia Panek was third in 28.95 seconds.
Nisiewicz won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.89. Amanda Crass was second in 1:15.17 and Jerome was third in 1:15.73.
Bridget Bryan won the 500 freestyle in 6:20.47. Colbie Goetz was second in 6:53.79 and Violet Nelson was third in 7:58.65.
Chloe Barber won diving with 221.65 points. Natalie Morgan was second with 172.95 points and Genevieve Styles was third with 170.65. Grafton doesn’t have a diver.
Panek won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.53, and Edynn Strube was second in 1:05.27.
Kerbel was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:21.94 and Claudia Gaskell was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:32.35.
Port’s 200 medley relay of Schicker, Walber-Yoshioka, Lotz and Panek won in 2:09.06. The other relay of Crass, Gaskell, Jerome and Strube was second in 2:20.75.

Their 400 freestyle relay of Coppersmith, Adams, Coleman and Elmendorf was third in 2:38.44.
